Thread: New Doctor-- drop Rifle, to get Pistol?

I'm a new Doctor... I am almost up to Novice Rifleman. I just started Medic, grinding in the Cantina, so I'm not familiar with how we work "in the field".

Should I switch to Pistol, for the closer Ideal Range? I imagine that I'd have to be right in the action, so the Rifle skills don't do me much good. Currently, I have a SprayStick for close work-- ideal range is 30m, and 10-159 damage with a speed of 1.6. Is this good enough? What is a typical Ideal Range on a pistol? Or, for that matter, on a Carbine?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Pistols are the usual choice for doctors it seems. The primary reason being that the weapons are faster, so you're heals aren't delayed for as long. A very good carbine and a few boxes in the carbine speed skill tree can bring a carbine in to the same speed range as a pistol due to the way that weapon speed is capped. Pistol also has the advantage that you take less damage from melee attacks than either carbine or rifle. Rifle is usually not a good choice because it's geared toward prone, sniper style shots and you need to be standing to use a stim. It's a better choice for a CM though due to their ranged heals.

I wouldn't worry about range--right now, range doesn't make much of a difference unless you use rifle. What you should think about is that right now, you drain mind most (if you're like the riflemen I know) when attacking and you also drain it to heal. Switch to carbine or pistol, and your stamina will increase in a fight, since you can heal yourself of almost all the damage you cause yourself by fighting. Raise focus and willpower to where you get back most of the mind you use on heals, and you'll be in good shape. I can solo some pretty hard opponents because I can last in a fight a long time, even though I don't deal out the damage as well as someone with higher weapon skills (pistol spec here, no adv weapon prof). Good luck.

I went Pistol, I figured that since I need to be in the fray and I'm a support unit, that I needed a weapon for defending myself but also for assisting during attacks. The thing about rifle is that that's best from afar, while Pistol's best at 20m. A good FWG5 is all you really need, or just a scout blaster. There're some serious Scout Blasters out there - I just think FWG5's are more sleek in their design. XD

Back to the whole Carbine/Rifle thing... there is something known as tanking. As some of my friends put it, "I'll draw", which means they'll open fire first, and the monster will attack them first. Keep in mind, those of you who are in the group... just because you don't open fire does NOT mean you won't get attacked. Some monsters do aggro grouped members, even if they are not aggressive, especially if you're nearby. You need to be able to defend yourself or you are not going to be very efficient if you come under fire. I've mentioned this story before, but one time we ran into some serious trouble on Dathomir and I ended up being the last one standing (1 dead, 2 KOed, pet useless because CH was down, droid KOed and I had to hold out until someone came back around. Sure, you might say "Well, if you were doing your job, that wouldn't have happened". Yeah well, I was staying back and was just healing, but some NPC rifleman thugdecided to mindshot me and I was down in 3 hits and was absolutely useless once I came back around for quite some time.

Just something to keep in mind.

hi, i am master doctor/master pistoleer and i like pistols because they drain action the most when you use them and doctors buffs make it so you never run out of action. doctor/rifle might be good though if you pick that though i would become zabrak because they can have very high willpower to make mind regen faster and when you use rifles mind is the main stat that drains when you use rifles styles

I think pistols are 15m, and carbines are generally 25 ~ 35. Not sure. I think you'd want to stick with pistol unless you know a human master weaponsmith who can make a badass modification of a carbine with low HAM, like Avec on Chilastra. He made a DH17 snubnose Carbine, 96 ~ 226 damage, 2.5 attack speed, and as mentioned, low HAM costs. Something like 36 / 28 / 14 I think. Around that area. Low for a carbine. I think Rifles are really a support weapon in battles against creatures because of how much damage you take, but in PVP mind damage kicks arse, so yea. I suggest pistol unless you can get a kickass carbine.

When I go out on hunting trips as a doctor, I don't fight at all. It's just not worth the risk of delaying a heal or getting aggro, and my pistol skills suck anyway. If I were to use a weapon, I suppose I would go with pistol or carbine for the reasons you mentioned (currently I carry a pistol). Definitely not melee, as it causes you to stop to fight when you are attacked, increasing the time it takes to get to your groupmate and heal him.

Basically, it's just to be able to dish damage when needed, including when I get jumped while out wandering. Pistol seems to be the front-runner, so far. I'll ask around about the carbines, though. Thank you all for your advice.
