In my experience, the schematic number is totally random, and your schematics reorder themselves randomly, too (kinda like your inventory).
I'm guessing it's to discourage the use of macros.
Just keep trying different numbers, and only pop into your datapad when you think you're way off.
I've had datapad schematics right next to each other, both used by the same tool, but they were about 10 off in the schematic number. I think the schem numbers are determined the day you learned them, and they get all jumbled up.
As for using the same number but getting different schematics, I'm pretty sure that's happened to me. I think that's just a random bug. Once you find the number you want, and don't go back into your datapad, it should work with the macro.
Keep at it

It's not random, if you try to order the in any way they will reset the order every so often though.
Please post the macro you are using for crafting or at least the malfuctioning part.

Go to your data pad
Then go to your schems
Then hit the change view button (this will put them in order of schem number)
Then either count down or just take a guess.
Then run your macro and see which schem pops up.
Then go back to your data pad and see how far up or down you need to adjust.
Understand that:
A. if your near a droid or a crafting station this can through the number off unless your constantly near that same droid or crafting station.
B. As you gain schems the numbers will change.
Or, just for fun, try making stuff.

You say that occasionally you see the bec but then the deadeye pops up..... any chance you only modified one of the /sel lines in your macro?
another to check is that most of these macros involve the use of three to five crafting stations. Make sure you are using the same type of crafting station in your taskbar. Different crafting stations give you different options for the draft schematic. That would cause a different object to pop up if all your /select lines are set the same.
