Well I say if you are only looking to heal yourself, don't bother. If you want to be able to rez, then you need to master. Doctor is messed up anyway.

Healing damage at 4000 is about the same as at Master. However, the other things you would gain from the other three branches can also be helpful. The action buff is very handy, for example. As is the rez at master.

All those extra's aside, the CL bonus of 5 is important when PvPing. I do not see your being able to "seriously enhance my defense" by placing your skill points anywhere else. There is very little stacking in the CU. Adding the vendor to your house might be nice, though.
