Thread: Is it possible to get by with surveying 1?

I'm closing in on the last few boxes of TKM/Master Doc and have hit a dilemma. Sure it would be nice to keep terrain negotiation (what little there is with explore 1) but I would be forced to shop for all my resources. Would I be able to get away with survey 1 if I'm only trying to support resources for my own products and possibly a few to sell on the bazaar? I've also toyed with the idea of droping doctor down to 0 4 4 4 since the meditation line gives self cures to disease and poison. I guess that could free up some points but with both mastered...18 points doesnt do a whole lot.

My Alternate character is doing just fine with novice artisan. I really dont move the harvesters all that much so the short waypoints to the resources isnt a big deal.

I have a character that is a Master Artisan/Master WS/Master Arch, and I have to say that yes, it is absolutely fine to get by with even novice artisan. The only things, that I can see at least, that the surveying ladder gives you at all is better range on surveying and better results on sampling...neither of which I honestly even really use. They are nice and all and they do make things a good bit easier at times, but NOT necessary. I think the surveying line is really only good for those who truly want to reach Master Artisan.

Actually the increased range that you get higher up the surveying tree can be a hinderence at times. I ran out to a harverster farm one day, and started to survey. I had the tool set at max range. It foundme a nice deposit, but it was in the direction of town, and at the range I was using, I ended up out of the building zone. I had to go back to the farm, reduce my range, and follow the waypoints until I got the best concentration, still in the building zone.

If you utilize other professions, you can flourish without survey.

I had to give up all Artisan, so now I just hire surveyors. There are tons out there, some just needing the points. Ask them to go find you whatever resource you need, and give them a starting point. Add in any parameters like how far you want to run. When they find a spot, they send a WP, you send em a Tip. Some trust involved, but you could also follow them around to make sure. Find someone you likeand cultivate a realtionship.

I'm about to run into the same dilemma.I've thought about training novice artisan before resource shifts then untraining and switching to novice scout for terrain negotiation and harvesting. Glad to know novice artisan will be enough. Perhaps with mounts, novice scout won't be necessary either.

You can get by with Survey I, or without artisan at all. Those 15 points could be used elsewhere. Find a friend that an artisan and ask for new points after shifts. You won't need novice scout if you get a level 10 mount froma BE/CH... unless you wanted a weak /harvest.

I had to drop Master Artisan to go the Doc, Slicer, Armorsmith path, and Business was the first to go followed by Survey. It's just not need since they took out Farmer/Miner... I want those in game.

My thoughts exactly. But why even bother with Survey I since you don't get increased range (128m) until Survey II.

You don't need any survey. I'm not sure if you are aware of this but there are other people that play this game. Among those other people are folks who have the survey skill and would be happy to sell you whatever you need.

Well I'm Master Doc/MCM with Survey 1 (or is it 2?)

Anyway it is doable but it's more difficult.

As it has already been pointed out. Do it in volumn. Drop 4-8 heavies at a time when you find a good spot and sit there for week and a half. And remember! when the resource shift you can't sample it for few hours so don't pull your harvest right away until you harvest the new stuff for one tick.(you can still harvest the new stuff even when you can't sample them) It give you good 12 hours head start on other players.

remember some resource are sometimes in weird shape like L or even snowmen so unless you are at 70%+ just mark the spot and continue looking. Thats what make it more difficult. with larger range you can see the shape more clearly

And never throw away old WP. lot of stuff pops in genreal area. For example on lok I dropped my harvester in same genreal area for 4 months now.

BTW regarding terrain negotiation, you can get some cheaper by killling Novice Scout (15 points) and by taking Novice CM (6 points) if you got ranged support 4. Actually nowI realize since your TeraKasi you probably don't have Marksman.

Anyways, I've gotten by at times by hiring surveyors. I usually pay 25k (u could get bypaying less I'm sure but I'm into instant gratifcation)for one to accompany me on a search and bring my harvestors along and get the job done right then and there. I move a lot of meds though and am dealing with rate11 heavies etc. so it pays off in the amount I would have spent buying those resources. I picked up survey 2 to try it out and enjoyed the peace and quiet of surveying, so I do this myself for now.
