I keep seeing hints or tidbits indication Doctors get access to weapons and armor. What exactly does this mean? I thought I saw that Doctors get access to "battle armor", is that a class of armor?

It certainly is armour... Bone, Marauder, Padded, Ithorian Defender, Kashyyykian Black Mountain, R.I.S. (quest), and Factional are all types of Battle Armour.
Many weapons only need you to be a certain combat level to use them, but without some skill points spent in the profession the weapon is from you wont be able to use it very well.
