currently i'm grinding for master doc/swordsman. i've also done the math that i would have just enough skill points to get either artisan or scout. would it be better to be an artisan since u could survey for the resources, or scout to harvest?

I'm master doc/master sword. Just switch whenver you need. If I'm out hunting meat, go to scout trainer and spend the 1500 creds it takes to get novice and hunting 1, which is all you can get. Then go back to Novice Aritsan whenever you need to drop some harvesters.

You could just alternate both depending on whether you want to survey or harvest really.

Yeah, that's what I do. I always have plenty of scouting xp left over from harvesting meat when I do, so I can get the first box of either exploration or the harvesting one, depending what I need at the time. Getting survey 1, however, is a different story, but it's not that big of a deal to have a bit more range than before, especially since you can get food that will increase your range anyway.

Go scout for the terrain negotiation, nothing worse then crawling up a hill

Scout definately.

What I do is find a handy noob artisan and hire them to survey for me. I pay 10k for each wp they send me which has the resource I'm looking for, and which has an efficiency of over 50%. If the efficiency is over 70%, I pay 15k.

It works for me and they love it.

(Also, Jedi get +50 survey when they are born, so if you have one, use it to survey ).

That is what i do as well. I also throw in Marksman so my guild mates can get app xp. They train me in ranged suppot 1. Combat XP is maxed all the time, so it is a great to help out friends.

I use scout when i am hunting, and artisan when looking or resources. It only cost 100 xp to switch.

Scout hands down more useful to you im the long run

Put the extra box into explore the bonus you get for hunting one isn't worth the extra speed.
