i played the game for the first 2 months of retail. at that time, i had about 300k credits, which was pretty good.

i re-activated my account just a few days ago, and continued where i left off with doctor. he was 1-2-3-0. from what everyone tells me, advanced bec's are the way to go for grinding crafting xp.

so i sampled and used my 3 micro flora harvesters (best i can afford atm) for 2 days now, and amassed roughly 10k lokian wild wheat. i sucked it up and purchased 5k tatooinian fiberplast to save time. i went ahead and started crafting last night, and rolled through my 10k wheat in about half an hour and go enough xp to get the first box's worth of xp.

then i looked at the total amount of crafting xp necessary to get master chemist, and it looks like i will need a total of around 130k wild wheat, as well as fiberplast to max that tree out.

so, can anyone tell me how people are affording to start this tree on their own? at this rate, it will take me about 3 weeks just to get the wild wheat, and another 3 weeks to get the fiberplast just to grind it out. thats not including all of the maintenance and power i will need to keep these things running all day. and all the while, im not producing anything that can be sold to make enough money to do this.

any advice? ive read pretty much everything i can get my hands on, and nothing ive seen touches on this subject. thanks for your time

I pretty much do this to make me cash while I craft.

Craft yourself up a nice ammount of decent Stim C's and join a hunting party somewhere. While on the hunt make sure you have novice scout and just harvest meat from every creature they kill.. You will get the mission cash and the meat, and generally if you heal the party alot they get guilty and tip you a little extra. This also means you gain doc XP all the time while you out hunting so it helps progress your tree's. Set up a single mineral harvestor and give it power/maint for a week or so on something like a 70%+ sweet spot of steel.. Check the bazzar for cheap chem and water to go in your components after you have paid your expenses from the mission cash.

If you rinse and repeat this process you will be able to grind out on things which don't require advanced components while getting enough money in to keep yourself in resources, at the same time progressing your doc skills. It might take you longer but I'm not really sure because with this method I am always actively gaining cash, xp, dont require much maintenance and can use any product I find without relying on a specific resource.

Meh, who knows, it seems like it's going well for me and I am progressing at a rate I am comfortable with which makes me feel usefull. No doubt I will reach a point higher up the tree where this isn't viable..

This is why everyone HATES going up the crafting tree. Not only does it take forever, it's expensive too. If only those stupid tumbler macro people could figure out a crafting macro, they'd be all set.

Sorry. I digress.

I was lucky because I have a friend who got me materials. I also had novice artisan and scout at the time, so I could get my own stuff. Remember this when you are buying materials: quality doesn't matter when you're grinding. Ask a surveyor to find you some grind quality resources. S/He shouldn't overcharge you too badly (they'll be happy to make some money off of the crappy resources).

I would imagine you can get grinding resources for 3cpu. So that would only cost 180k, it you had 300k that should be enough. Or you can just be patient and let your harvesters run for a few days and you should be good to go.

I think your math went awry. You need a total (once you make Novice Doctor) of 64,000 crafting xp (if Stratics is to be trusted). One ABEC gets you 80 xp (or maybe 84, but I'll say 80 to be conservative). That's 800 ABEC's. At 18 units of wheat per ABEC, that's 14,400units of wheat (and14,400 of fiberplast) required to grind out the Doctor crafting.

I don't think it's too hard to find grind quality Lok Wild Wheat and Tat Fiberplast for 1 cpu.I bet a lot of doc's have some crappy stuff sitting around. Post on the trade forum that youwant to buy some grind quality stuff at 1 cpu, andsee what happens.

If you know a decent friendly architect, you can pick up some BER 8 harvesters for probably not very much, maybe 20k each and then plant those on Lok and Tat to get the resources needed for ABECs, you'll probably want to do this anyway as both those resources are excellent sellers on the bazaar (for other people grinding doctor ) which you can use to supplement your income.

Added to which you'll need the resources for actually making stuff sooner or later, I know I had nothing like 300k when I worked my way up to master doc, hell I only just broke the 1m credits mark last week and I've been playing the game for months (there always seems to be something to spend the money on).

Don't use ABEC just use BEC. Sure there are less exp per craft but you will save a ton on resouces. You can use any org/inorg so but the cheapest junk you can find for 1 cpu. This is how I did it back in the day.

The other thing you might do is just ask an old time doc on your server if they have some junk they want to clean up.

You may also try ALS. Little less exp but you only need 6 units per resouce.

You may also be able to find some med harvs that are cheap and much better BER/cost ratio.

Every time I log in I'm terrified they changed the game to Dance Dance Revolution without telling anyone after holding a "focus group"

Your micro flora farms are probably from before the patch that allowed experimentation on the harvesting rate. If they are not BER4, look for new ones. They should be rather cheap and you'll get much faster harvesting.

Mastering the crafting in Doctor really isn't that bad, anyone who thinks it's awful should try macroing the survival tree in Ranger, it requires a LOT more crafted items and uses resources that have to be harvested from creatures rather than just mined.

... and yes, with a BER of 8 (1 medium or 2 micros) on a 75% spot, you should be able to collect all the resources you need it no more than a couple of days.
