Thread: IS it possible to give up skills but save the exp?
I guess it comes down to what you mean by “keep” the experience - since you spend your Experience when you train the skill, it’s gone and can’t be gotten back. However, if you’ve been Master anything for a while, you’ll most likely have a big pile of related experience floating around. When you drop your skills, you do get to keep that experience - but there’s a catch if you want to use it again. You can only have twice your highest skill’s worth in saved up experience (give or take 10,000), so if you drop ALL of your skills, you will be very far over your “cap”. When you go to re-train, you get to thank lag (probably for the only time in your life) because the game takes a few moment to up-date your cap. This means you can normally get a few skills re-trained before the game catches up and says, “Wait a minute there, your best skill takes 10,000 experience, but you have 50,000!” and promptly deletes all of your savings that’s over the cap.
From my experience, you will keep the xp when you untrain. However, when you retrain, your cap will be recalculated and brought down to that figure if you are above it. This will not occur until you retrain.
I believe the cap to be double whatever you need to gain the next highest level for that type of xp. Huh? I hope that made sense. ![]()
For example: If you have Pistol IV, your cap is 250k pistol xp (this is double the 125k required to get novice pistoleer). Let's say you max that out and have 250k pistol xp. If you untrain Pistol I-IV, you will still have 250k pistol xp. But, once you buy back Pistol I, your cap will be recalculated to 10k ( double Pistol II's 5k requirement) and all extra xp will be lost forever.
I hope this helps. Just so you know, this exact thing happened to me. I was trying to help a friend get apprenticeship points and figured I'd have enough xp to buy back Pistol IV. Well, I was suprised!
Oh well, I have Rifles IV now!
Also if you USE that skill (shoota pistol), you'll lose the experience down to the 2x next-box limit.

I noticed for ranged combat, it is also used in the pistoleer class, so you can drop the 4 ranged classes to use the skill points temporarily, then if you wanna get combat medic or smuggler you can quickly train all 4 ranged classes again.
