They don't work by making the packs better directly.
Port increases your chance of experimentation success. Slightly. Grind ABECs for a while with and without port to see the difference. Use as many points as possible per attempt (in one line at a time though). Do some with, some without... With port you should have slightly more amazings, slightly fewer moderates and goods. Amazing successes yield 8% per experimentation point, greats yield 7%. On enhances, there are two experimentation rollsmade each youexperiment on the effectiveness line. One roll is for the pack's effectiveness, andone is forits duration; the result displayed is an average of both rolls.
Pyollian cake does the same thing, but for the initial combine. I'm not sure whether it affects the rate of critical failures (Didn't they make that constant, based on skill level?), but it certainly helps the rate of amazing successes. An amazing success on the combine will make your starting percentages higher. Not an insignificant benefit in some cases...
Research centers work the same way (for experimentation, manufacturing centers I believe serve this function for assemblies)... And stack with food (as far as we know...).
Anyway, I'm a fanaticaluser of all 3. Every little bit helps.

Hey, thanks for the info, hehe. I will try using the port in a research city tonight and see how they come out, because you're right, every little bit helps when you only have 10 exp points. Blast those skill tape prices, lol.

This is slightly off topic - but I was wondering precisely what is required to get the research center experimentation bonus?
Just be within the city limits?
Be at the city medical center?
Be near a private crafting station in the city?
Be an actual tax-paying citizen of the city?
I am interested in trying out this bonus, but I am not exactly ready to join a city and take all the overhead that comes along with city/guild affiliation. I am a completely independent doctor and I like it that way.
Anyone know the rules on this?

Are there any other docs out there that use this stuff. I have been a doc for a long time and just tried using this stuff last night. Made 10 buff packs, 5 with and 5 without..they came out exactly the same. I had all great successes with and without the port and assembly was great successes with and without the cake. Does anyone else out there use this stuff effectively? Now I do notice a difference when I craft in a research city. I guess I will try the port in a research city as well. What do you guys think about this stuff?

Ihave used the bespin port and have noticed no differance either. Like you said the come out exactly the same even without them. For all I can tell maybe that it reduces the chance even further of a critical failure.
