Thread: Buffs and Balance... what is balanced for you?

There's a lot of talk about changing buffs and armor to make the game more challenging. I'm curious what people think is balanced. As doctors we have in our hands the means to determine that balance. We can adjust our buffs and armor to figure out when the game becomes challenging.

There are a few knobs to adjust, specifically creature, armor level, buff power, and weapon power.

For this test creature will be: Janta Shaman, or Enraged Rancor

2500 buffs with 80% armor and what weapon
2000 buffs with 60% armor and what weapon
1500 buffs with 40% armor and what weapon
1000 buffs with 20% armor and what weapon
You're own combination:

For myself:

2500 buffs with 80% Kinetic armor and Avg. Powerhammer. Janta Shaman and Enraged Rancor take seconds to kill with no thought.
2000 buffs with 60% Kinetic armor and Avg. Powerhammer. Both are still extremely easy
1500 buffs with Mabari armor and Avg. Powerhammer. I have to heal myself and mind the specials
1000 buffs with Mabari armor and Avg. Powerhammer. I have to be vigilent.

For a Swordsman around 1000 - 1500 for Janta Shaman seems balanced. Against something harder I'd be in real trouble.

What is balanced for you, you're play style and skills?

It's difficult to say, considering we don't know what balancing the MOBs will get when the fabled combat revamp happens.

But with TODAY's game, I would vote for a 1250-1500 buff with 50% armor. These are the top values, not the average. The average value could be in the 1000-1250 buff with 40% armor range.

I think that making doc buffs based on percentage would be a long stride to making them balanced. Since a character has only so many points for all 9 pools (with species min's and max's), we would no longer see all 4 red and green pools at 3k+. Maybe one or two could be near that much, but that would mean the others would be much lower--even buffed.

A hard cap at 200% increase would be a good place to start testing to see what is balanced. Of course everyone will have a different answer, but I think we all need to test it out in that "sandbox" that the devs referred to the other day for testing the combat revamp. Only then will we know what would be best for a balanced combat system.

2500 HAM no armor against an Enraged Rancor is difficult as a pistoleer.

Buffs will be turned into a percentage based system more than likely, but I don't want to see say buff power/10 * base stat, because that will make our buffs about as powerful as entertainer buffs which take no time or resources to make.

I also don't want to see stat based buffs because they will hamper both Trandoshans and Wookiees because of prohibitive stat caps - with the current stat cap system in effect, Trandoshans would make lousy tanks;

  1. Their action pool is their weakest pool - so this is where 95% of all incaps will come from(I'm not kidding, I can have higher mind stats than any of my action stats)

  2. Their feet are unarmoured - yep, through some ingenious design work, our weakest pool is also one of our unarmoured pools - hits to the hands are pretty rare, but hits to the feet aren't

  3. Our innate /regeneration ability is a HEALTH buff of all things.

Now given these three facts, people would rather have a Bothan as a tank, they can wear full armour and they don't have stupid stat caps, who cares that Trandos have 5% more HAM ? They can't put it where they need it, namely the action pools.

Does that make sense to you ? That people would prefer Scrappy Doo over a 7' tall lizard bred for combat ?

... because that's what will happen.

There's a reason that humans make up 2/3rds of the playerbase, it's because the other races are all gimped.
