Thread: problem with replies and suggestion on how to address it. Good for everyone

Since we as doctors get more tells then the average player this is a bit bigger issue for us but it does effect everyone in the game to one degree or another.

The problem is that when you do a ctrl-r or /reply and type the message that someone else might send you a tell and when you hit enter you get the reply off to the wrong person.

Example of the problem:

Bob: Hey Hawkeye are you buffing and can you buff me?

(self I hit Ctrl-r and start typing yes and sure I would be happy to help you)

(but while typeing it I get a message from Joe)

Joe: Hey Hawkeye I am dead in a very dangerious location will you come and res me then buff me. Sorry I can't pay you but I really need your help.

(I hit enter and.....)

self: you reply to Joe yes and sure I would be happy to help you"

(I quickly realize my mistake and do a ctrl-r MT)

(but before I can, I get a message from Bob)

Bob: Hey man what is the hold up can I get a buff

Self: reply to bob "mt"

So Bob who asked for a buff gets a reply of MT while Joe gets a message that I would be happy to help him when I am not and I want to just buff the people standing in line in front of me.

By this time I am standing in front of my computer verbaly cursing it and wanting to throw the keyboard through the wall (ok bit of an exageration but you get the point, I am not really a quick tempered sort).

A SOLUTION:

it seems to me that from a programing stand point that a reply is just a specific type of tell. And that the only difference is that there has to be some sort of name lookup when the message is sent. My suggestion is to move the code where the name lookup occurs to just after a ctrl-r or some key is pressed.

This might have to be done my making the Ctrl-r into some sort ofmacro like command instead of a command line command since command lines need to be complete and press enter at the end to execute.

If the Ctrl-r could be make into a macro that simply put in the command line somethilng like "/replyTo lastTellName" and then let us type the message and press return and have the new command /replyTo be just another word for tell. Or simply put in the word /tell lastTellName in instead then maybe the name would be correct and we could get the messages off to the right people.

I hate having to explain to someone who is making an unreasonable request that I won't do it after I replied to them that I would. Even though they may have experienced tell hell themselves they don't want to hear it when it comes to them.

Hopefully this wouldn't be terribly hard to code

this should be very helpful to a large number of players

this should drasticly reduce frustration with the game and increase enjoyment.

this wouldnt help in this case, but it will in a lot more, ust /rt to reply to the last person you sent a tell to, so if you are chatting with a friend or something, you wont send mts to people wanting buffs

Actually, thats a pretty good idea.. So it would remember who you wanted to send the tell to the instant CTRL r is pressed.. Not bad!

I wonder where a suggestion like this should go? Maybe you should post it on the Game Guides or Development or something like that.. I dunno..

I cant believe that SWG ingnored the message development done in EQ, for heavens sake !! that game has been running for over 5 years maybe, just maybe there might be some lesson learnt you could use in SWG, so many little things like being able to link and item in a tell so a person can examine it or hitting TAB and cycling through all the people who have telled you since you logged in are missing from SWG. Ok heres my solution you SWG Developers walk across the corridor to the EQ guys and buy them a coffee, maybe they will let you borrow some of there already in game tricks.

I gave up on /r a long time ago, I just type /tell <name>. Probably saves me a lot more time overalll then constantly typing /r MT, then redoing my messages.

Agreed. The ancient MMO EQ can handle replying to the individual that you STARTED typing the message to, not the last person who /tells you as you finish your message... why can't we?

And this would be a 'Core Systems' thread I think... though as a Doctor it affects me like never before.

I'd like to see /assist <name> work, too. But I doubt it will ever happen.

And hitting Reply in EQ causes your chatline to open up with /tell <name> and a cursor. Tab/Shift+Tab cycles through the last 10 people you got tells from.
