Thread: Doctors' Opinions
Thanks for your response. I actually don't mind craftingper se.I quite enjoyed being a tailor, but running a full fledged tailoring business is what took up a lot of time. Between keeping the vendors stocked, filling custom orders, answering customers questions, maintaining harvesters, keeping displays fresh, advertising, etc, etc I didn't have time to do anything else. My available playing time now requires me to be away for a couple of days at a time, a luxury I couldn't afford before. If I can take care of business at my own pace without having to worry about tending to so many things on a daily basis, I would be happy.
As for joining hunting parties, I don't mind that either. In fact I would love to see more of the planets, since I've seen little outside of my shop. I can see how a doctor's skills would make quite a difference to a group. Are there many masters around or are they pretty rare?
im not master yet, but i am 4/4/4/2. so all the healing (the part i enjoy) is gone. I dont goto med centers anymore, i dont sit in catanias healing dancers, and i no longer follow parties for medical xp. But yet I still enjoy being a doctor. I find it very rewarding being able to bring someone back from death, buffing people up the wazzo, and healing others. I feel that I am a usefull part of the group, unlike when I was a CH.
I run harvestors and sell recources on the bazaar for 2.5cr apeice no matter what quality to make my money.
The only things I buy are rez packs and enhance packs. I buff people to make up the diffrence of buying the packs, and then I buff myself when needed and guildmates free of charge when requested.
I bet you could go from Master Medic to Master Doctor in 12 hours or less.
7 or 8 hours of crafting.
4 or 5 hours of healing someone /warcry1'ing a MOB lair.
I know using some plain Stim-B's... I made 40,000 medical xp in 20 minutes.
The slowdown would occur when you hit your XP cap...and had to go train.
Ok I haven't gotten far up the doctor line yet and haven't decided if I want to master it yet or not. I have 0/2/2/4. I took the crafting for the moneyin stim b's but I really don't like selling or any of that stuff much. So I have a merchant sell my stims for me. I sell them to him he sells them to other people.
I drop harvesters once aweek on lok talus dat and tat. Fill them with cash and power and check them ever few days while I hunt. I have a factory I put my stuff in make my schematics and have the factory run off the stuff I need and give the crates to my partner.
Unlike tailor you can easily do this or run your own vendor with out haveing to worry about the displays or custom orders or any of that kind of stuff. For that matter you could just sell them on the bazzar and make pretty good money.
If you choose the run your own shop route then stock up first before you start selling. I made the mistake of letting my partner get me started sooner then I wanted. So now I feel like I spend most of my time baby sitting the factory for the next batch of stim's or parts of stims. This will also help if you have to be out of the game for a day or two.
All in all not a bad way to make money and still get to see the worlds and hunt by yourself or with others. This is the least tied down crafting profession and the one that takes the least time commitment I have found and I have tried most of them at one time or another.
I enjoy the versatility of being a Doctor. Doctor's are useful contributors in almost any hunting or combat environment, and you get to get involved in the game's rich crafting system also.
There are drawbacks however. It is cmparatively hard to make money. If you are compelled to make "the best" medical products, you do a LOT of travelling. PersonallyI find the profession very rewarding however.
Before SWG came out, I was going to be a Smuggler and Weaponsmith. When I first got the gameI took Medic as a utility skill to be dropped later. 3 weekson I had filled more Medic boxes than the rest of my professions put together. I enjoyed it immensely. After making Novice Smuggler and Weaponsmith, and not having a fun time of it (grinding unarmed >_<
...I just said, to heck with it, Im going to do what I enjoy most. I ditched them all and went for Doctor, and I wont ever drop it, its just too useful.
Hello,
I had a character on Starsider that was a master tailor and a master merchant. I really enjoyed running my business and had a lot of success, but it was a lot of work and I often found all my time being spent just keeping the business running up to my standards. After some tribulations, I have a new character now, who is looking for a new profession. I am ruling out another pure crafting class because of the time constraints. Combat doesn't interest me too much, nor does entertaining. I know that doesn't leavea lot left, but I was considering the doctor profession and am looking for impressions from those who have achieved master status especially. What I really want to know is what you like and dislike about it, and how much of a time commitment it would take. I really enjoy helping people and feeling useful. Are there many doctors about, and do you feel yourskills are really appreciated and needed? Do you have anyadvice about what to do and not do? Are you glad you became a master doctor? What other skills do you find helpful as a supplement? Thanks very much for your help.
Well, that's a lot to try to answer, but here's my take on it:
First of all, being a doctor can be as much of a crafting profession as any other (including tailor). My character, for example, makes a living making and selling various pharmaceuticals (Stim B's are the best seller, by far). If you want to make any money as a doctor, this will most likely be the route you'll have to go. There's lots of money in this market, but it can get pretty hectic and, like you said, it can be a lot of work.
Of course, selling products isn't the only way to make money. You can certainly charge for your services. Charge to heal wounds and to travel with adventuring groups. You mentioned that you weren't interested in fighting, but what do you think about travelling with a hunting group? Would that interest you? That's certainly something that every adventuring party wants - a doc travelling along.
Of course, a couple of the best abilities in the game belong to doctors: enhancements and revival. Nothing quite compares to enhancing someone's stats by 2500+ points for a couple hours - talk about power.
I'm quite happy that I became a master doctor but, unlike you, I wanted to be a crafter. I was originally going to be a weaponsmith but, when I became a novice medic, I really enjoyed myself. One thing led to another and soon the artisan skills went and the doctor skills piled up.
Just be aware that there's still lots of crafting involved with being a doctor. If you're not entirely opposed to doing some crafting, being a doctor can be a very rewarding profession. But, if you really want to get away from being a crafter, you might want to try something else. It's difficult to be a good doctor and not craft at all.
