I believe they work but are not very valuable. Non great asseblies are not a great cost for med items since most of what we make is via a factory.

it does suck when u are crafting single items but as soon as u make a manufacturing schematic then its no big deal, assembly just gives u bonuses for experimentation for great and amazing successes, if you're master doc with some clothes and good components you rarely have to worry about it, and since not too many minerals go into a med product, its not really a huge deal.
weapon smiths and armor smiths would make much better use of it because they use more minerals and components, and a mess up for them is a lot bigger deal.

if u're master +8 is probably more than enough
personally, i haven't had a failure since i went master, but every once in awhile i'll get a good success instead of a great, but that's 1 out of maybe 20 times crafting.

I cried last night, I have +7 med assembly and got good success 2 different times trying to craft a janta pack. 2 sets of 3 identicals down the drain.

Apparently it's experimentation bonus that affects both experimentation points and the experimentation results (good, great, amaxzing, failure, etc). Assembly only affects the chance of getting a critical failure when you shift from the resource screen to the experimentation screen. So the +7 assembly had no affect in getting the "good success".
It's a really bad design to have one skill be far more valuable than the other, but that seems to be the way they designed it.
