Thread: Healing and helping people, What a Doctor is all about.
Hello everyone, I play Vixx Draken on the Flurry board. I have been Master Doctor for a few weeks already and I'm loving it. During October I dropped my Bounty Hunter title for a more defensive character. I mastered medic and did Combat Medic for a few weeks. I was upset with the lack of shops that a newbie Combat Medic could buy from. I was also considering dropping Pistoleer for a the Teras Kasi line.
So I thought about and thought about it and dropped Combat Medic. I came to this board a few times... did the crafting macro and healed Rebels in Anchorhead. I remebered selling A buffs in Anchorhead for 2000 credits. Suprisingly there was a market for buffs but many Doctors where buffing in Coronet and the higher level planets.
At the same, I was going up the Teras Kasi line. I found out that a Doctor/Teras Kasi combo was very good! I became a Master Doctor early December and mastered Teras Kasi yesterday. I now buy buffs at shops and buff customers at a profit. I also get resources and buffs from a retired Doctor who dropped medicine to grind professions for Jedi.
As of today, the same ex-doctor transfered ownership and I now own and operate the Medical Center in guild's player city. It was a great honored bestowed upon me. I have never been happier with my character then I am right now. Yesterday I defended a guild's rebel bases from ultimate doom and found how uselful curing poison and disease could be.
The ironic thing is, I am about to become a college freshmen this fall and I'm considering going into Medicine and ultimately specialize in Radiology. I like helping people and becoming a Doctor in Star Wars Galaxies has allowed me to do that. I thank our Doctor correspondent for working hard and getting issues solved and the Developers for listening.
Vixx Draken, M.D.
I guess this game is good for something......
Choosing people's careers.
LoL
I'm glad u enjoy it and good luck with your college radiology thingy!
Well, that makes two of us. I planned to be a Doctor in-game before the game ever came out, and already knowing I'd be in a PA, I knew that I'd have people to help (not to mention they're also my friends).
Ultimately in real life though, as I also will be getting into college this coming year (well, waiting for those acceptance letters first x_x), who knows if the SWG experience will help in deciding what I want to major in and such. My dad obviously thinks that becoming a doctor is probably one of the more stable and better jobs out there, though I don't want to be restricted to just that if possible.
Oh and, if this game (or a later incarnation) is still out in ~4 years, I'm pretty sure trying to juggle this *and* med school would NOT be good ![]()
I on the other hand became doctor by accident ....
First, I thought I'd get all the novice skills, then go up artisan. I was spending some time in Med Centres, but mostly crafting.
Then I meet a couple of players in an otherwise empty Anchorhead who've been sampling for radioactives by hand - black bars everywhere, the walking dead ain't in it.
So, 2 or 3 hours, every wound pack & most of the resources in my inventory later, & nary a tip btw, they're healed & my highest profession is medic. My now I'm just starting using Stim Bs.
So, I get invited on a hunt ... earn XP like crazy. Four hunts later, (two successful, one middling, one a disaster) I am now sick of the squill caves, but a Novice Doc. ![]()
Plus, now I won't have to listen to ppl screaming "Can anyone heal my disease?" ![]()
You've got plenty of time to figure it out I suppose, but make sure you take a good look at the economics of practicing medicine and the outlook for the next 50 years. It's harder and harder for RL doctors to make money because (1) rising costs of malpractice insurance and (2) private practice is harder to maintain. In fact many doctors are retiring early or giving up the practice of medicine because of this. Working in HMO you won't get the traditional amt of compensation one would expect for a doctor since you are an employee not in business for yourself. In addition to playing doctor in SWG u definitely need some merchant skills to get a taste of that very real side of being a doctor.
Since you are considering going to med school you should immediately start logging volunteer hours in hospitals, this helps a great deal for getting into good schools. If you start now a few hours a week you will build up enough while u finish your undergraduate work. Another good application goodie to have is to get a job in a university medical research laboratory. Getting into med school even with 3.9 gpa is very competitive my good friend applied to 20 schools and got into 1 -- on the waitlist.
I started playing on July 3rd as a scout, and I took up novice medic to heal myself when in town and at my camps (to reduce downtime). After sitting in the Med Center helping a couple others and talking to other medics, I soon found myself to be a Master Medic. Then I kept getting asked if I could heal someone and I would, and I became a Master Doctor in early August. I'm kind of proud of the fact that I never grinded med xps in the cantina or had someone tumble for me. That I know of I was only the second Master Doctor in the city, so cost of training was the main factor to slow down the leveling process. Now I'm a Master Doctor and Master Artisan and I sell medical resources for my fellow Doctors, Medics and Combat Medics.
So I got started in the medical field for selfish reasons, but I stayed to help others. ![]()
