Thread: A little help with Buffs ...
I was wondering of someone could give a new gamer some help. I've only been playing galaxies for a week or two and don't quite understand buffs, or how to get 'em. I hear doctors are the folks to come to . . .so I'm posting on this forum. A little help, please.
Thanks

Buffs enhance your base abilities (Health, Stamina, Strength, etc). This accomplishes three things, 1) increases your HAM, so you can survive longer, 2) Increasing your secondary stats under your HAM which will allow you to regenerate your HAM faster, 3) Increasing your secondary stats will also decrease the amount of HAM special attacks use. Doctors can only buff attributes associated with Health & Action, stats are buffed by Dancers (mind) and Musicians (Focus and ????).
This said to get buffs simply look for master doctors, usually outside of starports and ask them if they are buffing, there will be a small fee but they do last for over 2 hrs.
Doctors can be somewhat tricky to track down as we don't need to be in a medical center to apply buffs - all we need is a droid (and virtually every master doctor has one). To find one, use the player search and look for any master doctors in the area. However, don't be surprised if you don't find any - many of us turn off our Master Doctor tags due to the high number of requests we get for buffs when we wear them. If I'm selling buffs, I'll turn my tag on so you can find me. If not, I turn it off.
Dancers and Musicians are usually a little easier to find simply because they need to be in a cantina. Just head to a busy cantina (usually Coronet or Theed) and see what you can find.
Often, it's a good idea to keep a list of folks that you've gotten buffs from and offered good service. Like I said, doctors don't always wear their tags but, if you know someone is a doctor, you might drop them a line anyway, if you're in need of a buff. Perhaps that person is selling buffs but is just not near you. You can probably use your friends list for just this purpose. I've had people look me up from across the galaxy and travel a few planets just to get buffs from me.
One other thing to keep in mind is that not all buffs are equal. Masters buff better than anyone else and, in terms of doctors, the quality of the packs being used also makes a big difference. (Entertainers don't use packs, so it's entirely dependent upon the skill of the character, not some tangible item.) This is another reason to keep track of good doctors that buff well. If you get good buffs from a doc, make a note of that guy/girl. That doc is probably using the best resources he can find to make the best enhancement packs- not all docs have that level of commitment or knowledge. In fact, you might also want to keep a list of doctors that provide poor buffs so that you don't go back to them.
Just keep in mind, buffs are VERY random. (You can check out the FAQ to see just how random, if you're interested.) So, if you get a couple bad buffs, that might not mean that the doc is using sub-par packs, it might have just been poor luck. It's important to look at the average over ALL the buffs, not just a couple.
I hope that helps.
I'd recommend Sharnaff hunting out of Corellia. Ask in groupchat if anyone can recommend a doctor, preferably one online or that is usually near.
Usually other players have had the same problem you do and added a couple of "good" ones to their friend list.
Thanks all. I'm a little less confused. Can you give me an idea of what I should pay to get buffed?

Yes, 6k is a pretty widely used standard (I use it myself), but I've seen prices range from 3k to 10k. Also, I've used the scheme in which I get paid 1 credit for every 2 points buffed. For me (averaging about 2000 points per buff), that usually works out to about 6000-7000 credits.
Personally, I like the sliding scale and I recommend it if you are being buffed by a docyou don't know. That way, if the doc turns out to be selling sub-standard packs for the same price as docs using good packs, you don't get ripped off. Rather, you get what you paid for. The only downside is that you'll want to have a calculator handy.
