Thread: Advantage of Survey skill boxes
I'm getting close to using all of my 250 skill points. I currently have Survey IV on the Artisan tree.
Would I be atalarge disadvantage if I dropped down to Survey I?
I want to continue to use my harvestors forresources, but I don't want finding resources to be more of a hassle than it already is.
Any comments/advice are appreciated.

I jump back and forth with my survey skills all the time, depending on were I need the extra skills at any given moment. The only thing I noticed is you will have a better chance of finding a resource at a greater distance. Whereas you wouldn't see it on a low res scan at all. But once you find it at a low-res scan you just keep tracking it to the highest concentration and survey again until you find the spot you want. Same as a high-res scan just less information. Besides, once you get close tothe resource you're tracking chances are someone else is already there,so just run to the harvesters and survey for a good spot.
I held on to Survey IV for the longest time. Then, in order to dabble in CH, I went down to Survey II. What a difference! I was on Lok trying to find my wild wheat and it was taking forever because of the short range. I gave up and someone trained me in Survey III. Much quicker trip.
Unfortuanately, I have grown tired of the harvester game, and I am going to be shutting down the last of mine sometime this week. Because of the money I can make asa Master Doc and Novice Pistoleer, I am content with just buying what little resources I need.
And yeah, the survey missions are fun at first (Run 1024m, use survey device, earn between 3000 and 3600 credits each time), but even those have gotten tiresome for me. I would rather use my playing time seeing more action. After all, I spent a lot of playing time already sitting around medical centers. (laughs)
If you're going to drop to Survey 1, you might as well drop all Surveying because Survey 1 offers no range bonus over Novice Artisan.
If you're really strapped for points, you can try surveying with Novice Artisan, but it's a bit harder and definitely more time consuming. Actually, my biggest gripe about it was when I was trying to sample a bit of everything in order to determine what it was I wanted to harvest. With Surveying 4, I can easily sample sources with only 15% deposits. With Novice Artisan, I often had to find sources over 30% just to take a sample and see if I liked it.
If you're going to drop your surveying skills, I'd suggest hiring a surveyor to do your legwork for you. They can provide you with quality numbers as well as waypoint directly to good harvesting locations.
Or, you could even go a step further and buy all of your resoruces. I do a lot of harvesting on my own, but I can never harvest enough on my own to fulfill all of my orders - I need to buy plenty of resources to supplement my own harvesting. There are plenty of resource salespeople out there. My suggestion is to buy stuff off the bazaar and pay attention to who is selling it. Try to contact those folks and see if you can get them to harvest lots of goodies for you.
