Guy in my server forum has a good idea that I think would help doctors ... artisans selling crates of single-use resource survey devices for non-artisans.

Actually I read it wrong -- he's talking about littering the world with disposable personal harvesters, whereas I thought he was suggesting a new item. I think my misinterpretation isa better concept

Hey, I actually thought it was a cool idea too. I'd support it.

Actually I would like a survey droid.

It could work like this:

Droid is crafted with a specific survey tool kit or multipule ones if they can be held in that model. Then you get the screen but it uses the level of the droid for the actual survey and can be used with no survey skill.

The only argument I have heard about this is that it replaces a player. I would like to know how it replaces a player.

I don't know to many folks that get paid to survey for other people. Maybe 1 out of 1000 players. And when surrend time comes for me I will just have one of my friends survey for me for free. So that argument doesn't hold alot of punch to me.

i think they are referring to the people making a living off harvesting resources for others.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Actually our guild has large survey and mining contracts out. Ther are whole guilds of miners. They enjoy going that extra little bit outside of the city to find that higher concentration.

And as a Master Doc/Master CM, I love 'em. I personally feel like a miner class should have been in the game and survey removed from artisan. Then the only crafter able to gather their own resources would be the scouts (hide) and BEs (DNA) and I don't see that as a problem. But then you'd have the problem of having to add something back to artisans.

And those would be the players that are replaced

Hmmm... no other device in the game grants the use of a skill to someone who doesn't have the training. I don't know that I really want to go there. After all, you just know that bounty hunters will be asking for the one-time cure poison devices soon. But we can probably do something unique that doesn't infringe on a skill.

My thought is a one-time "survey" device that behaves like a harvester, telling me "what is here" without giving me directional information. So the chemical version would tell me there is 75% of chemical A, and 22% of chemical B, and 12% of chemical C, etc.

I can already do this by purchasing cheap personal harvesters (I've seen them for as little as 250), but this would be a less expensive, charge based device that would allow me to do the same. It's not a real substitute for surveying, since it would be a huge pain to pinpoint the exact location of the highest concentration of anything, but it would allow me to either look to see what people are harvesting when I see a huge harvester setup or get reasonably close to a good concentration of a specific resource.
