I'm sure this forum gets it's fair share of questions along this line, I did search the first page and doctor's FAQ before posting this with no answer, so hopefully you won't all be too sick of answering it. Feel free to direct me to a relavent topic, if easiest. Unfortunately, the question is preceeded by a lot of background waffle, so skip it if you wish.

Shortly under a week ago I gained Master Doctor, due to a holocron. Shockingly enough I actually enjoyed playing the doctor and have decided to stay as one from now on. Forget Jedi, I can do that when I'm bored of everything else. What I always particularly looked forward to was the buff pack D's. Being a Carbineer as well as Doctor, these things are a dream, but it's turning out to be a bit more trouble than it's worth. I've scoured the various planets looking for the ingredients to make the advanced components and the packs themselves only to find some of the worst quality resources I've ever seen.

Having not played this game particularly long, little over a month, I've still got a lot to learn. I surveyed the entire of Lok for the wheat needed for our Advanced Biological Effects, discovering, to my horror, that I could only ever get an OQ of 111. I made the logical assumption that Lokian Wheat will always be the same quality, no matter what patch I find it in. It followed that my Dantooinian berrys were even worse, and no particular ingredient is astounding. So, finally having got to the point;

  • Will these ingredients always be this quality, or, after a resource shift, could they get better?

  • The Adv Bio Effect's created from these resources are 18 charge, something like 13-18 power. How do these measure up to a 'good' ABEC? What sort of power/charge should I be aiming for?

  • I realise there are sub-groups for some resource types, such as radioactive gas. Is there any one particular group that is of higher quality than the others that I should look for?

Being a poor starter Doc, who spent all her money on stims, revive packs and materials to get to the Master Doctor stage, means I can't just buy the materials I want, I have to harvest them myself.

Thanks in advance,

Resources shift every week, so yes you can get better resources.

What matters as well is UT for the fiberplast and PE for the wheat, I get better results with high UT on the fiberplast than with high OQ.

Ok, let's step back a little bit and talk about resources and how they work. With a few fundamental concepts, I think you'll be able to answer most of these questions on your own.

Resources shift in and out over time. They wait for no one. Usually, they shift every 8-10 days, but they sometime shift sooner or later. Once a resource has shifted away, it's gone forever.

When you open your survey tool, you see a list of all of the resoruces that you can currently get (that apply to that survey tool, at least). For example, if you open your chemical survey tool on Tatooine, you'll see all of the chemicals that you can get on Tatooine. One of the key resources you're going to need is Tatooinian Fiberplast. If you look in the Chemical Survey Tool, you'll probably see something like this:

  • Chemical

    • Fiberplast

      • Tatooinian Fiberplast

        • Agookoo

This means that, right now, there is one type of Tatooinian fiberplast available for harvest on Tatooine and that fiberplast is called Agookoo. No matter where you sample that fiberplast from on Tatooine, it'll be the same. Agookoo is Agookoo - it doesn't matter where it comes from. The only difference is going to be how dense the supply is.

If you survey for Agookoo, you'll see some percentage numbers appear in the viewer. The higher the numbers, the more dense the supply. The more dense the supply, the more fiberplast you can pull out of the ground at that particular place in a given time. When it comes to dropping harvesters, you want to look for the highest density that you can find.

Eventually, Agookoo will vanish from Tatooine and it will be replaced by some other fiberplast. At that point, you need to pick up your harvesters, find a new location for the new fiberpast, and put them back down.

It's important to realize that new resources might be better or worse than old ones. Therefore, if Tatooinian Fiberplast is crummy right now, you might not want to bother harvesting any. Then, if the new stuff comes in and is excellent quality, you might want to harvest a lot so that you have some set aside for when the resources are crummy again.

Many of the resources doctors needs are always available. By that, I mean that you can always go to Lok and find Lokian Wild Wheat, or go to Tatooine and find Tatooinian Fiberplast, or go to Talus and find Talusian Water. In some cases, you might even have more than one to choose from but, usually, there is just one of each at any given time. That's why it becomes important to get it while it's good and stock up for when it's bad.

Some resources, however, are not always available. Class4 Liquid Petro Fuel and Dolovite Iron are good examples. These aren't always available in every galaxy. Not only that, but they won't always spawn on the same planet, either. You might find Dolovite Iron on Corellia this week, then it might disappear from the galaxy for a month, and then it might appear again on Lok fora week. Again, it's important to stock up on good stuff when you can. When it's been gone for a while, it gets expensive to try to get your hands on some.

The subgroups are only important in that the resources you're harvesting must match the schematic you're using. For example, Stim E's call for fiberplast while Advanced Biological Effect Controllers call for Tatooinian Fiberplast. Therefore, from the diagram I had above, Agokoo would work for either, but a fiberplast from Corellia (which would be under the heading Corellian Fiberplast) would work for a Stim E, but not for an Advanced BEC.

When you experiment on an item, you can see an experimentation percentage. That percentage tells you how the item compares to a "perfect" version of that item.

For example, if you're crafting an Advanced Biological Effect Controller and you're experimenting on charges, you might start with 10 charges and charges might be at 30%. That means that, at 10 charges, you have reached roughly 30% of the potential of a perfect ABEC. If you experiment a few times on it and reach 15 charges and 50%, you have reached 50% of the potential charges of an ABEC. I'm not exactly sure what the numbers are, but I believe an ABEC has a max of about 25 charges.

Of course, the only way to reach 100% would be to have "perfect" resources. For charges on an ABEC, that would be Lokian Wild Wheat with OQ of 1000 and Tatooinian Fiberplast with OQ of 1000 and UT of 1000. You can guess how often you can get your hands on resources like that.

I hope that helps answer some of your questions. If you have more, please let me know.

That has certainly helped and has cleared up all the questions I have about medicine crafting and surveying. Thank you for such a detailed and comprehensive reply. I can see this may take me a long time before I can make the very best buff packs, but hopefully what I can do will keep me going for now.

Thanks again,

Naco.

You better believe it. More than anything else in this game, gathering good resources is a process and it takes time. Unfortunately, there is little you can do to speed up that process. Resources have their own time schedules. The best you can do is work hard to stay on top of the shifts. I would recommend making www.swgcraft.com your friend (although some of the services are currently turned off - they should be back up tomorrow).
