a Melee profession
Swords being best, then I'd suggest TKM/Fencer and finally Pike. I've done em all and I'm really enjoying pike/doc

Swords or TKM.
U cant beat that powerhammer, but meditation is so sweet.
Either way you win.

TKM. Go down on the Corvette? Watching your team mates mind get blacker and blacker? Not me with TKM. Ya, sure, a lot of the meditation line is redundant with doc. But the convenience of being able to heal your mind after a death or disease/bleed can't be beat.

It depends. Who do you want to fight?
If you're focussing on leading in combat, don't roleplay, and are just looking for raw grunt, then Swordsman and/or TK and pike are good. As a roleplayer a Doctor is a highly-educated person, perhaps even a bit snobish, so arts like TK and Fencing may be a better fit.
If you're a PvE-er then TK or Swords, then perhaps Fencer and Pike.
If you're a PvP-er then probably Fencer/Pike, Swordsman, TK.
My favorite character is a Master Doctor / Master Fencer, but I usually PvE, and the damage output from fencer isin't so great. But! It suits the character to be so.
In both cases you will have trouble stacking due to lack of skillpoints, though I'm sure there are some useful combos. All to often I hear people talking about how wonderful Swordsman is then I find they're stacking with Fencer.. har.. I am thinking here of Masters.
Melee classes really aren't that hard to grind, particularly if you have someone to tank for you. Try a couple out and see what you like.

Master Swords & Master Doc here and I love it.
The problem I see you having with Rifles and Doc is the cost to your mind.
Rifleman and doc are both great support profession. That's the problem though, you can't really solo much.
