Thread: Harvester/Factory 101?

Get one factory. A flora, a mineral , a water and a chemical harvestor. You will need artisan with survey 4 or a very good friend with that. You will need a house as well. Most people grinding to architect will give away small harvestors so it shouldnt be hard or that expensive to get them.


It is hard to find good resources and good spots for them, You want to place your harvestors on a 50% or higher spot. you will have to travel to different planets looking for different resources and sample to see what resources are good. Sometimes a certain resource (doloviteiron for example) Wont be on your server for weeks or months at a time.

Is it completely neccessary to buy a house? Or is it just for storage or something?I'm really not looking into starting a business and setting up a shop front. Just the bare essentials for making the doctor life a bit easierand allow me to sell some products when I feel like it. I don't mind buying some of the easier to come by resources but would also like to get my hands on large amounts of the good stuff. I understand what your saying about needing surveying to find good spots of resources. Couldn't I just contract an artisan to find a spot for me so I could come out and place the harvester? But I'm still wondering if you have to move harvesters around since you say resources pop up at different locations all the time. Woudl I be fine with the small personal harvesters? Or different sizes for different things?

I'm looking for some input from you fellow doctors on harvesters and factories. I read the factory section of the FAQ and that helped explain alot. The thing I'm not too sure of is how to go about setting things up. I'm currently an unguilded doctor and spend the majority of my time solo. I'm not looking to create a huge business (I'll probably be selling things on the bazaar) but I want to have a set up that would allow me to be self sufficient. I don't want to buy house and a full set of harvesters, just the minimum that would make things easier for me. What would be the first harvesters that I should look into buying? Do I need to contract someone to find a good place for it? Can I place it myself without artisan skills? Would I have to move things around after they are placed? Basically I know nothing about the whole factory/harvester process and need some input from seasoned doctors. Thanks for all the help.

Can you make do without the Artisan Survey skill? In my mind, no, definately not.

The quality of your product totally depends on the resources you used. You'll need to go out and find various resources. Resources shift every 5-8 days, meaning that if you've found a good spot for something now, it will be gone in about a week and you'll need to find that resource again. Also, as mentioned before in this thread, sometimes resources are not in shift at all and you'll have to wait for them to come into shift.
Add to that the fact that if you want to make better medical supplies, you'll need more specified resources. Then just "an" organic won't do, it'll have to be wheat from the planet Lok for example.

Then the statistics on your resource matter also. For Doctor Overal Quality and Potential Energy and Unit Toughness are important statistics. The higher these are, the better your final product will be. This means you'll not only have to go out and find specific resources, but you'll also have to sample and check if they're any good for you.

With the resources shifting all the time, this is an ongoing process. Just hiring an artisan once for a good spot will not suffice. And finding someone who's willing to go out for you every week and test the Talus water, the Dantooine berries, the Lok wheat, the Tatooine fiberplast, the domesticated oats, the dolovite iron etc etc and then follow the concentrations and find you a good spot for all of those ... that's highly unlikely i'm afraid.

Which brings me back to the harvesters you need. You'll obviously need one for every kind of resource you need as a Doctor, which means a Flora (organics, wheat, berries), a Mineral (inorganics, metal, dolovite iron), a Chemical (inorganics, fiberplast, class 4 liquid petro), a Water and a Gas (reactive gas, used for enhances).

Depending on how much medical supplies you intend to make a personal might do, but my guess is they'll only do for starters, soon you'll be wanting heavies.
Also, if a good resource is in shift, you may want to put more than one harvester on it and get the resource in bulk. That way you'll get a nice stock of a great resource and are assured of being able to make a good medical item.
If you just pull a thousand of 800 Overal Quality Lokian wheat now, you'll have to make do with whatever's around when you run out, which might be 100 Overal Quality wheat.

In short (tho it's a bit too late for that i think hehe) you may be able to gather your resources with less than all 4 survey skills, but being a crafter without survey at all makes you permanently and totally dependant on others.
Whether you need more than one of each kind of harvester, or whether you need personals or heavies .. that all depends on the amount of recources you'll need. You could start with a personal of each kind and soon enough you'll know if that works for you or not.

Hiya, somewhat related to factory question. I realize the benefit of a factory, but are there any Doctor schematics that Require Factory produced components?

Most of the upper level doc stuff requires multiple identical components. So yes a factory is necessary, unless you buy these components.

well houses arnt NESSESARY...but they are only 3k per week...not asking much...(thats a small)

Houses are a necessity to me. I don't even sell meds except for D enhancement buffs that I carry on me. With that being said; by just gathering resources needed, having subcomponents, & carrying meds on you, you're most likely going to surpass your carrying & bank limit.


My setup is 1 medium Naboo house, a food / chemical factory, 1 heavy chemical, flora, mineral, water, & gas harvesters. I also have 1 fusion generator & 2 solar gens to supply power to my mines. I look for the good resources and mine all I can and don't sell any of it. I try and sit on my resources as long asI can since some good shifts can take awhile to pop up again.
