so is there any point in experimenting and THEN making a drafting schematic?

Yes, experiment first and then make the schematic.

What does it do, lets say you experiment with something and like where it is, if you create a draft schematic instead of a prototype can you keep it at those %'s?

The schematic is for factory production. Instead of making a prototype, ie. 1 item, you can make a schematic and then load it into a factory. Put all the ingrediants that you used in the schematic into the factory and turn it on. It will mass produce that item then

Very handy to carry a crate of Stims with you, a crate has a max count of 50 items. And crates only take 1 inventory space
