Thread: The Factory Problem
We're all aware of the issues with factories not working properly when you try to use factory crates of components instead of having all the components separate and in the input hopper. A friend of mine messed around with his factory and discovered a very important thing that you will all be happy to know:
how to get the factory to use items from the crate properly.
The basic trick is that the factory crates never actually enter your main inventory. When the factory is finished producing your components for an order of stims, open both the input and output hoppers. Drag the factory crates containing the BECs, Chem Releases, and Liquid Suspensions directly from the output hopper to the input hopper. If the crates never leave the factory, it is possible to use the components directly from the crates. In order to make the schematic for the stims you want to make, however, you must make extra components. Instead of 50, make 52 or 53, so there is an extra crate that you can remove and use for the schematic.
Ood also reports that it is possible to make schematics with up to 1000 uses if you manually enter the desired quantity. We're not sure if this is a bug or if it's intentional, but it's very useful for large orders of stims.
Can't wait to try this out. If this works -- it's a good avenue for dev's to go down when debugging factories. *hehe*

I haven't had a problem using crates in the factory for a while. Here's what I do:
#1. Match the ingredients in the exact order as the schematic. This means ADD them in order. Don't move them around after the fact.
#2. Always use a minimum of 2 crates per crated item. (The second crate can have very few items in it.) Make sure the ID codes on the like crates match.
#3. Group like items together. (organics, inorganics, crates of BECs, etc)
#4. Have extra ingredients (i.e. organics)
Run it.

One problem with this:
You have to make an extra to pull it out and build the schematic for the stimpack. I just made 100 BEC's thinking I'd make myself a full crate of Stim D's. Well -- I can't pull out a BEC to make my schematic. Next time i'll set the recipe to 101 instead of 100.
There is a very simple solution to this problem I read here a few days ago and I forgot to write the persons name down so I dont know who to thank or give credit for this but .......
All you have to do to get the factory to pull from crates is put at least TWO crates of EACH sub component the schematic your using calls for. The factory will never "see" the last crate in each set and will not pull from it. But pulls fine from any crates in front of it.
I always do a small over run now so I have a crate of 10-15 items I can pull from to make the schematics and then stick back in as the "last" crate of a set so the factory will pull from the full crates of 50
So let me get this straight....
To produce a crate of 50 Bs I need to produce 101 BECs, 101 CRDMs, 101 LS, andenough organics to make 50 kits? So after the first 50 run, then I'm left with a case of each sub component and no '2nd crate' for them when I make the next 50 run?
Aluvia,
Will this also work if I haveextra crates that does not belong to the schematic being currently used?

Sorry. That doesn't work either. I always run jobs of 100, so I when I fire up the factory for the final product, I always have at least 2 crates of each, and still it shuts down all the time and eats components. Best run I've had so far is 13 before a shutdown.
Best runs I've gotten have been by taking some component out of all of the crates taht I will be using and the putting the components and their crates into the input bin. That seems to shelp some.
If the factory stops, I don't mess with what it's already made (you can just leave that in the output hopper and any others it makes will simply add to that crate) I simply pull the component crates from the input hopper and take out some more components and put the components and their crates back in again. Seems about the best way to get a run going so far, for me.
