I'm at the point where I need to decide between Doctor and Combat Medic.

I am leaning towards Doctor, but have a question. Can a doctor, who has a surgical droid, access all of his "hospital" skills outside a med center?

Also, could anyone point me to a good Doc vs. Combat Medic guide?

Yes, your droid will allow you to use your healing abilities while away from the hospital. When in a city you still won't be able to heal while in another building (cantina), but you will be able to heal in the streets.

Make sure you get a droid with the Med 6 module. This module comes witha 110 rating -- meaning it gives you a 10% boost to your skills.

Also, make sure it has a food/chem crafting station installed. This counts as a private crafting station, meaning you can make the highest tier medicines with it.

Someone else will have to answer your question about the advantages of Doctor -vs- Combat Medic. I don't have enough experience in CM to offer a comparison.

I went with Doctor because of the added skill points needed to get to Combat Medic. At the time there were huge issues with CM (not that there arent any with Doc and others, but...) and since I wanted a healing profession, and also wanted to use pets this was the best way for me.

The beautiful thing is, you can master both doc and CM and still have a decent skill with a weapon.
