Thread: question for the Docs (long post)
In my experience more than half of my patients never thought to offer any sort of tip or even bother to say thank you. Yes I was getting xp, but at the same time, its a valuable service. I have always felt that at least the basic courtesy of a 'thank you' is in order. Even so, I'd hang out there, chatting with the other medics and docs, making meds and striking up conversations with the wounded as they came in. Even with less-than-considerate customers, it was fun in its own way.
Why don't I hang out there now? Everyone is AFK. One or two tumble-monkeys spamming their need for tips and some number of afk docs/medics healing them. Patients who have come in, given up on recieving attention and gone afk waiting for the auto heal. And I know can expect, based on past experience, more than half of those coming in for treatment will be surly and non-appreciative. Quite frankly, other than a burning desire to be really nice and occasionally meet good people, why would I choose to spend my precious hours of game time this way?
If there's no fun to be had, no money to be had and I no longer need the xp, quite simply, I find better things to do with my time. The problem is the system, there is ALMOST NO INCENTIVE for healers to hang in the med centers and even less incentive for those who have mastered their professions. The spammer tumble monkeys are an added reason to avoid them (at least in my book).
That having been said, I do heal folks who ask me directly, unless it means I will miss a shuttle. I do carry disease and poison packs too. I'll always heal an obvious newb and not think twice about it. Experienced players ought to have enough sense to offer at least a token tip if its a service they'd like to recieve in the future.
One danger of the above method, if someone sees me whip out the medbot and lay down some healing, I can pretty much expect to get asked if I'm buffing once they've checked my badges. One act of kindness can result in lots of, 'can u buff plz?' and all of the nonsense that doctors have come to expect from that.
You'll note, if you read the various threads on this board, that lots of docs want there to be a reason to hang out in med centers. The player-based economy has driven things in their current direction and it will take some action on the part of the devs to correct it.
IMO there are three kinds of docs.
1. Grinders. Blame the devs for them.
2. Buff monkeys (I was one). Guys who do most of their doc thing selling buffs for cash. Not knocking them. It is much tuffer than doing missions. Much Much tuffer and at least they provide a service to the comunity unlike mission monkeys.
3. Good docs. (I am trying to become). These guys buff for cash for time to time but do lots of other things. They love to use there doc skills out in the field. Will hit anyone with a cure or stim for free without being asked. They have all the meds and resouces on them even though that only leaves them about 2 extra spots in their backpack. You try carring all that crap. Lets do the math (6 buff packs + 6 buff crates + 6 wound packs + 6 wound crates + 8 state cures + 8 state cure crates + 5 sub comp. + stims to use + stims to sell+ crates of stims + 8 types of resouces etc). Add all the other things a non doc has such as 9 armor pieces, weapons, food/drink, etc. Now you may understand why a doc does not have what you need when you need it every time. Now just try and loot something with all that stuff.... Arggg.
If you want to know why no docs are in the med center just ask yourself why would a doc be in the med center. There is no incentives. My droid is better than a med center. I would much rather be out in the field than just sitting around waiting on someone to show up. I would heal more people in the field in an hour than all day in a med center. I don't need the exp and I can make far more cash selling buffs or doing missions (where I can heal on the spot).
There may be more docs in the med center if the healing bonus was higher.. I guess I see no need to be in the med center when my little droid gives me 110 no matter where I am at.
If the med center were 120, then I would be hanging out in there doing the buffing... And healing wounds while I am at it..
And there are no incentives for a doc to hang out in a med center. Nobody wants to be pulled in different directions trying to heal several ppl at the same time. Especially when there's no guarantee of a reward (other than your own satisfaction at doing a good deed), and it's more likely you'll get some flak from some RL 12 year old who thinks he's the center of the universe and his wounds are more important than anybody else's.
So what would be some other incentives to get docs back in the med centers? What about the guarantee of a tip? Maybe if you get healed by somebody in a med center then you get charged a certain amount of credits? That might make ppl hesitant to go in there for healing, but maybe you could offset that by giving Docs a shorter delay between heal times, and a significant boost to mind regen. I can definitely say that I'd rather pay a few thousand creds for quick healing than spend an hour doing it myself for free.
I played my way up in the medcenters. Very rude people. No tips.
I understand that I get xp- but so do you when you take that mission... AND you get paid. Why should I not get paid for earning xp?
NOW, I don't need the xp. I have LONG ago maxxed every xp I have a skill in. I have no desire to have my chatbox scroll out of control because of the tumblemonkey spam, deal with rude rich players who think it is my duty to "healzor me now!". My med droid gives better healing stats than the hospital does. My guildmates (whom I tell repeatedly NOT to tip me because they harvest for me) tip me EVERY time I do something for them... I guess they appreciate me.
How to fix this?
Make a medic mission terminal with missions that say - heal 10 different players for a total of xxxx wounds (to try and alleviate a person diseasing a friend and exploiting the system)
Make hospitals do 110 and droids do 100, or 120 and 110 and ranger camps 100... do SOMETHING to make it worth my while to heal INSIDE where conditions SHOULD be more sanitary.
Fix the HAM system so that tumblemonkeys don't burn their action bar. This would be the much vaunted combat revamp that is now pushed back another few months.
Last way to fix this... GASP! - tip your entertainers.
Otherwise, I'll keep my novice scout tag up and only heal nice people and guildmates/huntmates.
And just out of curiosity, what do you consider to be a good tip? I've always tipped at least 1k, but I'll tip 2k if I'm in pretty bad shape. Last night I tipped 5k to the lady who healed me up after I suicided in Coronet.
Good replies all around, guys. Keep up the discussion. And somebody get a red to read this.

I've been wanting a Medic Mission terminal for months. Every other starting profession has missions they can run using the skills in their profession.
Make hospitals do 110 and droids do 100, or 120 and 110 and ranger camps 100... do SOMETHING to make it worth my while to heal INSIDE where conditions SHOULD be more sanitary.
I love the idea of raising the Med Centers to 120. High Tech Field Bases, the highest camp, is already a Med Rating of 100. My Ranger uses these camps to heal wounds in the field. While I'm waiting for my stomach bar to drop so I can take more brandy.
Fix the HAM system so that tumblemonkeys don't burn their action bar. This would be the much vaunted combat revamp that is now pushed back another few months.
It seem they push back the correctionsto problems that we want fixed.

I always tip the dancer I watch and the musician I listen to. A minimum of 500 cr depending on how much mind wounds and BF I have. I will tip alot more if they aren't AFK.
Otherwise, I'll keep my novice scout tag up and only heal nice people and guildmates/huntmates.
Nita-C Moonwalker was outside the Coronet starport buffing. There was nobody in line at the time, so I walked up and asked her if she could cure me. Without a word, she cured my disease and healed all my wounds. I thanked her twice and tipped her 10k.
Thanks again, Nita-C.

Ok, so it seems that most ppl here have no problem healing "nice people". So, if you're like me (I consider myself to be nice), what's a good way to let Docs know that you're a nice guy who'd appreciate a heal and will pay for the service?
And just out of curiosity, what do you consider to be a good tip? I've always tipped at least 1k, but I'll tip 2k if I'm in pretty bad shape. Last night I tipped 5k to the lady who healed me up after I suicided in Coronet.

Just asking with good english will get youa heal from meeverytime.
Yep, free healing is easy. Just ask nicely. To most M. Doc a well written request and a well written thank you is worth far more than the cr tip. However, adding a tip is also simply a gesture of good will.
If you want to talk to a brick wall then demand healing. The "Heal" gets no responce from me. I'm no dog.
Just my thoughts:
I have two characters in the game one is a MBE and MDoc. The other is doing the holo thing. I just made Doc like a week ago and got tired of doing buffs. I will still do them when people ask and I need some money. But when I go to Lok or Dath with my holo char. I take by Doc char. and set him outside the outpost. I will buff and heal when asked because I believe it is needed here more then on Coronet or Theed. Sure getting tipped is nice but I have had some very nice people ask for heals and if I had the packs on me I would. If I didn't they were very nice about it. I rather be out here on these planets doing Doc work than on the major travel routes. There should be a healing incentive for Docs to be here., not a buff incentive but something to make it easier to heal wounds while they are there. Like a percentage to be paid to the Doc for every wound point that they heal With the option for the Doc to override the preset amount if he or she wants to do it for free.
