Thread: Setting Pharmacutical Naming Standards
There is a huge demand for medicine in the player economy and customers want to know what they are buying with as little effort as possible.
I have been complianed to countless times about how frustrating it is locating somethingto buy from the bazaar, simply because everyoneuses default names in their product. If someone does decide to add additional information, everyone does it their own waycausingmore confusion.
I am looking for a standard. A method of naming items that other people use in an effort to bring order to the bazaar and that will educate players in medicine.
The first thing that needs to be addressed is woundkits. Each woundkit starts with a different name and therefore do not group togeather when sorting.
- First, I propose we add either an 'A' or the word 'Heal' to the beginning of all woundkits so they may be grouped togeather when sorting.
ex. Heal Health wound Medkit - A A Health Wound Medkit - A
- Second, the two primary attributes in medicine is power and charges. The bazaar automaticaly displays the number of charges on an item so Power is the only attribute lacking.
There are countless ways this number has been displayed, in an effort to keep names short it should be left just as a number.
ex. A Health Wound 150 Medkit - B Heal Health Wound 150 Medkit - B Small 350 Stimpack - B
- Finaly, I use a company name so others can identify my products easily, this 'tag' is appended after the power, this position seems to fit quite well.
ex. Heal Health Wound 150 Deltek Medkit - B Small 350 Deltek Stimpack - B
The next major issue with naming items for me tends to be the prefix 'Small' on all stimpacks. My stimpacks are definately NOT small! some questions need to be answerd by us, the medical crafting community,
Questions like:
- What is small?
- What other word could describe them?
- Which word means what?
- Is power the only modifier that should be consideration?
Make a list: Small - power [0-50] Medium - power [50-150] Average - power [200-300] Ultra - power [300+]
Those are horrible examples, but you get the idea.
This brings up a second question does the scale used onstimpack A also apply to B, C, D and E's? If not how is it different? Asimple +50 modifier per letter perhaps?
Speaking of C's and D's they have another naming issue, Skill Use. Medicine Skill Use. Required Skill is much more important than stim class to the novice medic, and needs to be treated as such.
If skill can be experimented on what naming modifier should be used to identify its required skill?
Several options come to mind, 'Skill xx' 'I'-'IV' (Identifying which level of Pharmacology is required)
Isthe name "Small 320 III Stimpack - C"better than "Small 320 Skill 30 Stimpack - C"
Discuss, disagree, brainstorm! We are only hurting our own sales due to this lack of structure.
Uhm, I just noticed a type in my first reply.. I name my stims Stim-B (300) because then you can see the healing value in the inventory -without- the need to hover the mousecursor above the name.
--
example of naming convention: I, Lyandra Wylde, make a stimpack B that is 22 uses, 210 healing and 5 medecine use. Such a stim pack would be named:
StimB.LW.U22.H210.M5
--
I'm sorry Lyandra, but this is more confusing than anything else suggested. Looking at that name makes my head spin. For the casual fighter type, this would probably be incomprehensible.
Also, I think it's very redundant to mention the charges in the name. A stimuser will always be able to read the amount of charges on a stimpack, both when the item is in the inventory, bazaar and even in a factory crate. So there's no need what so ever to include that in the naming convention.
Ryce idea is not bad
StimC 300 (pharm3)
Short and precise. Maybe even stretch it to
StimC 300 (MedUse 30)
*shrug*
I think you underestimate the fighter types Archon. They have taken novice medic and some have gone even further and they are as saavy about medecines as anyone. However, I dosell crates of stims mainly, and the folks that by such large bulks of crates tend to be the more serious players. You may be right that for a casual player it may be a little much, though it really wouldn't be hard for them to figure it out. My customers have complimented my naming convention.
I can't confirm this since I'm at work, but I believe that crates only show you the number of stim packs in the crate and not thenumber of uses each individual stim pack in the crate has. Maybe you can get this information by bringing up the details window? I am not sure, I'll have to take a look again tonight. However, by putting all the information in the name, it gives the buyer a single location to see all the relevant attributes of the stim pack without having wait for the details window to come up, which can be very slow at times.
The reason I include the manufacturers initials is because I am actually a distributor for many different medecine crafters. This gives the crafter the ability to mark his products and the customer the ability to recognize and purchase the goods of a preferred crafter.
The feedback so far has been great, looking over the thread all I have really seen though, is just how other people like to name their stims, and thats great, I for one have adopted some of these ideas.
For a new naming standard, something that could replace the current default names, we need to find something more appropriate than removing most spaces and shortening words. Ideas I have gathered so far are:
- 'Small' needs to be removed untill it has more meaning.
I would like to see more effort going into the crafting process, such as checks that could modify that name based on certain attributes in the future though.
- Wound needs to precede the type of wound it heals, followed by the Type
- Branding should be placed at end of item.
- Skill use does need to be displayed.
Sugestions include using order of numbers to identfy meduse, others want to use the actual word "meduse"
- Another sugjestion is to begin each item with 'Med.'
I tried this method once, and then later realised it was better to have a complete bag dedicated to medicine, negating its usefulness somewhat
Here are some of the other sugestions players have made:
LuvHandles -- Stim[type].[initials].U[uses].H[healing].M[medecine use] (note that each field is separated by a period)
Ex. StimB.LW.U22.H210.M5
NoDak -- Wound(Health)-B (PPP/CC)
RyceSWG -- Wound Health:B:140 [Joes Drugs]
RyceSWG -- MedType:X:Y/Z [Brand-name]
Enhance Health:C:300(MedUse:70!) [Joes Drugs]
RyceSWG also had this to say:
Also I think it might be better to put med-use notation (when used at all) in a format of what skill is required to use it (solely because it give a smaller number of defined values). The Med Use rating would only need to be added to the name of course if it has been altered such that it can now be used by someone who before might not have been able to.
perhaps we could drop charges but tweak usage:
example : Stim C400 power /33 charges /30 med use
P(U) format = 400 (pharm3)
So the name would be:
- StimC 400 (pharm3)
- StimC 400 (pharm3) [Joes Drugs]

I would hope that the goal is not to cause any more confusion, or to provide extrenious information here... To that I must agree that Lyandra's idea is definately more head swimmy, that was my first reaction too.
Questions that need to be answered while creating an item name should include ones like,
- Does the buyer really need to know this?
- When buying a crate, does the buyer need to know how many charges the contense will be?
- When buying a single stim on the bazaar?
- Meduse on a Stim A's and B's
- How quickly will the person understand what I trying to communicate?
- How much room is therefor missinterpitation or confusion?
- (220/26/5)
- StimC 400 (pharm3) [Joes Drugs]
- Stim-B (220/26/5)
- Small Stimpack - B
- GhilMed B-22/378 StimPack
- StimB.LW.U22.H210.M5
Instead of creating something extremely short, but possibly confusing, or extremely long and spelled out, find middle ground.
Default names are a good example, nobody has to ask what a "Health Wound medkit -C" is, its a medkit, that heals health wounds that should be higher/better than A and B's.
I believe its safe to say that stimpacks, enhancement kits and wound kits all have unique differences that should be accounted for when naming them. Perhaps we should focus on one group for a while and hammer out a solid template.
Ryce's idea has alot of potential
StimB
WR (MedUse:NUM!) [Customization]
Expanding on this idea, whichoneREADSand sorts better: for a stimpack - C with 300 power, 45 chargesand 30(?) med use:
- Small Stimpack - C
- SmallPharm III Stimpack - C 300 Po
- PharmIII 300 Power Stimpack -C
- StimC.LW.U44.H300.M30
- StimC 300 (pharm3)
Its between 2 and 3 for me, a toss up between Grouping Stims togeather vs Grouping items with Similar Skill Requirements togeather.
Those making crates, is adding a (charges) somewhere at the end suitable enough?
Pharm III 300 Power Stimpack - C (45)<BR>Small Pharm III Stimpack - C 300 Po (45)
well.. I'll add my little input on this matter as a novice doctor climbing the ranks..
1) number of charges is the easiest thing to figure out, the little number at the upper right of the icon says it all even if it is hotkey'ed.. and not that the bazaars show this.. there's really no reason at all for it to be permenetly placedas part ofit's name..
2) the "small" default is a little confusing.. I see no reason this can't be replaced with the following.. with anything in "()" is the base healing power of the unit..
small (0-199)
medium (200-399)
large (400-599)
X-Large (600+)
3) the medical use skill.. this is a little tricky.. most people learn very quickly what level of med's they can and can't use.. Im not intirally sure if we should have to restate it in the name.. so for now I just leave it out..
4) user name.. this can be very important when trying to setup, and get returned customers..
5) I also feel it's important to state if a pack was made with the Advanced sub-components.. so I add the word Advanced to the name..
in the end I have something like this, exsample...
Tekii's Small Stimpack B
Tekii's Medium Stimpack B
Tekii's Medium Adv. Stimpack B
Tekii's Large Stimpack B
ext..
-------
now if the goal is to get all the packs, form everyone, to group together on the bazaar.. well things could be moved around a little...
say..
Small Stimpack B, Tekii
Medium Stimpack B, Tekii
Medium Adv. Stimpack B, Tekii
Large Stimpack B, Tekii
------
this is a good topic.. coming up with a standard would be great.. but it needs to be "to the point, and at a glance" formula.... im a human not a robot.. well at least i think i am ![]()
Tekii, Eclipse
Woundkits have an intersting design to their name. 'Health Wound Medkit - C'adding an's' to 'Wound' provides a perfect place to include power.
'Health 320 Wounds Medkit - C' Isnt enough.
'Pharm III 320 Health Wound Medkit - C' This was inspired by the previous post and seems to read quite well. Though Im not sure how I feel about using roman numerals, it does reduce confusion and separates the skill required from the healing power better than 'Pharm 3 320 Health...'
Incase you are wondering why im not including puncuation marks like . [] or () its because no other items that i have seen contain these elements and see no reason to start.
Another point to notice, this recent idea doesnt remove any words, only adds a few to the beginning of the item... a major plus in this doctor's book.
