Thread: new scam

I heard about this new scam, but have not have it happen to me, so I do not know the exact details, or how to recognize it, or if it is at the same level as the bank tip scam. Today I was talking with members of a solo group and they were talking about this doctor who buffed a pvp group (49 people) and was cheated by each one. The way it works is that they used /emote (like "/emote tips you 10000 credits") I tried it with myself (I was alone), and I saw a thought bubble over my head...so I have no idea if the another person can see the bubble or just the message. I would assume they could see the bubble, but how was the guy cheated by 49 people? Just thought I would share.

Huh what? I've had customers come along and try to fool me, but there's 2 things I do that prevents from being fooled; watching the combat window (it shows buff status and tips) and have the inventory window open and record the amount of cr you have cash onhand and in bank. This is an interesting scam, I've not seen anyone pull this one yet and it certainly won't work on me.

I have not had this one, but I know I spam that it must be bank tips only. Well, when I am busy, it never fails, someone will sit around the group for awhile, and then ask me whereheis in line. Usually 5 minutes. I tell them they are not inline and they say they tipped me. So, I go through my log and I don't see it anywhere. They said they got the email and they will forward it to me and sure enough it says that I recieved the 10k from them. I am sure they take an old email and change my name on it and send it to me. So from now on, no bank tip with email means no buffs. I spam every 30 seconds and there is always someone thatcannot follow directions and bank tip it. OR they are master swordsman and they say they do not know how to bank tip...

ok, I'm not a doctor, but that makes me really mad
Let me just say from one of us combat types - for those doctors who are out there helping us, I deeply and sincerely appreciate it.

on infinity its common to use bank tips only.
since SOE changed the sender from the bank tip mail (its bank now) the bank tip scam doesnt work anymore.
its also a good technique to sort out the queues (first mail, first serve).

Dammit i got scammed today by the forward method above. i was the only doc in coronet so it was tall and spam hell. i just thought i must have deleted his e-mail by mistake, but then when i checked later i realised he hadnt tipped me. Everyone watch out for his scam.

This scam is easily averted if you know your way around the options menu.
Go to the colors tab, and choose an odd color for emotes (I use purple because it stands out well). Now, if someone tries to "emote tip" you, you can't miss it. Catch them in the act!
The colors can be a big help for catching real tips as well. Just use the keyword coloring option to color all sentences with the word "tip" in them (or the amount you are charging, or whatever works for you). Then, if you need to scroll back through your window, you can pick out the tips easily.

The easy way around the forward scam is to not delete your emails until you are done. Just don't open the next email until you are done buffing the current person to keep track of where in the line you are. I have in my info macro that people should wait until their turn to /tip me. I have it set up in my options that entire lines for 'tips you' is colored red. This with a new chat tab for only system messages will allow you to weed out the /emote tips, since they won't show up as a system message but a real tip will.

I saw where some servers make people get into an actual line. I think that is funny looking. How are you going to keep someone from cutting in line? You cannot push them out of it or punch them in the head! You cannot even attack them unless they accept a duel or your both overt. I like and use the bank tip option. It makes total sense. I do not delete the email until after I am done buffing them and while I wait for the message that says I am ready to buff the next person. But now, in my spam or my AFK message since I get alot of those from people standing next to me while I am buffing someone, I include no bank tip, no buff, no exceptions.

On other servers they dont make lines? On bloodfin its ALL lines. There are some cutters but they get chewed out by other people in line. i've never seen a doc that was not saying "Please form a line in front of me!"

It's really saddening to see this kind of thing. It's not hard to pay a person for his/her services. Nor is it hard to earn the money. Instead of spending X amount of time thinking up such silly scams, people need to go run a couple missions and be honest about it! Ok, sorry, I could go on and on about how dishonest and awful some people are but I'll stop now
