OK, I'm not gonna re-explain the tip scam.

So, this guy meets me in my city after /telling me earlier and I told him to come to me.

We exchange waves, I say 10k please, and before I could say no bank tips (my bad, I really need to write a macro) He had tipped me 10k from the bank...

I said dude I dont take bank tips, they are not necessary, there is a bank right over there! Go withdraw the money and tip or trade.

He said, too late..."but my last names on the email" (whats that mean? he could have just typed his last name right?)

So, not remembering the proper format of the emails, and scrolling through my emails for a good reference, I could find one so I said...

"Quick!, tip me 176 credits from the bank! you have 5 seconds or no buffs!"

I said that figuring no one could alter their generic, pre written scam mail in 5 seconds...

So, he did, tip me the 176 credits, in like 3 seconds, so I believed that the mail was legit, the format was identical to his 10k tip, so I buffed him...

What do you think? am I on to something?

He was right though, if his last name was on there, it was legit. He can't just type it in himself.

Also, keep in mind that tipping from the bank costs your customers fees, and when you do that, you're costing them even more money.

Since the majority of players in the game do not scam I say we give people the benefit of the doubt.

Frankly I'm tired of crafters feeling forced to institute "pain in the butt" policies because of the actions of a few and making the majority suffer. Weaponsmiths rejecting all returns because a few people returned a failed sliced item. Docs no longer accepting bank tips because of a few scammers. If this is how you want it go ahead I don't fault you but I'll give people the benefit of the doubt. The last time I buffed for cash I made 500K. That's plenty for me.

My policy will not change. I will charge 8K for buffs andyou pay me how you want. I refuse to put an undue burden on the vast majority of honest nice players because of a few jerk scammers.

I guess I don't see what the big deal is. I don't mind bank tip and I don't have time to watch my account each and every time someone tips me to see if it is legit or not. I usually have a long line of people to buff and if one or two of those feel the need to scam me, it really isn't going to hurt my bank. I have found that most people are honest and will pay.

When I buff, I make a list of the people who are sitting around me. When they tip me the 10k, I write it next to their name. I have a macro set up asking Do not tip until I tell you. Most people abide by this, but there are always exceptions to that. Have I been scammed...who knows. There are soooooooo many ways to make money in this game that if I happen to not get paid for a couple of buffs..well big deal. I can always go out and kill some stuff

I think it's a fantastic idea. Saying only a few people scam so you shouldn't punish the rest? Well only a few people proportional rob banks. Let's get rid of the security guards and bulletproof glass, too.

That's me that got scammed, this isn't some corporation. So yes, I won't accept bank tips unless it's cleared with me first. If I don't know how much was in my bank and you bank tip me, then the cost of your buffing just doubled, or you don't get buffed. Nothing I can do about it.

I make an effort to keep track of how much I have in the bank, but if I'm not sure, tough. Be mad and don't ever get buffed by me again, saves me the trouble.

As an Ex doc...not now, but a very regular payer for buffs why dont you just name and shame if the problem is getting out of hand?

the only people who whimne will be the scammer or potential scammers...no fair playing customer will mind one bit and if all of the other docs refuse to buff him..for a certain amount of time maybe the message will go out that they cant scam a player without retribution.

NB..any naming and shaming must be accompanied by proof.

The point of this thread was to help people who may not be familiar with the contents of a real mail VS a scam mail...

I was just saying, if you're not sure if the mail is real...you can check it by asking them to IMMEDIATELY send you a "custom tip" by giving them a specific figure to tip you so they don't have time to just send their fake mail... then you compare the two.

If the fake is poorly done, the "quick custom bank tip" mail will give you an immediate, side by side comparison of a real mail and the previously sent "questioned mail".

Just thought it would be a different idea.

OH I meant to comment on your comment before...

Are you really concerned with a 5% bank fee on a custom charge of approximately 100 credits???!!!

I mean really...

Ok so ask them to tip you 13 credits to check their authenticity of their mailing... jeeesus

Call it a bank tip penalty and move along...

I know it's not a lot. But they've already lost 500 credits in fees tipping you the 10k, and now you're asking them to bank tip you even MORE money. If you're having troubles with bank tippers, don't accept them. But I just don't think this is the answer. And don't "jeeesus" me for having an opinion, thanks.

I'm sorry, but rules are written for the worst common denominator. If all my customers were decent, honest folks, I wouldn't have to have a screen-scrolling block of rules for buff customers. But they aren't.

I have to protect myself from bank tip scammers, line jumpers, extortionists, whiners, and just plain asshats on a daily basis. You want buffs from me, you jump through the hoops. I make way more off each set of my buffs using them myself than I ever will selling them to you.

If someone hits me with the banktip before I can tell them I don't accept them. (1) I smell a rat. I mean who sits there with the tip ready to go like that? (2) You'll get your buffs, if you prove to be genuine. (3) If you are one of the seven people who hasn't heard about this scam, you needed to be filled in anyway.
