Thread: What are buffs?

I am the kind of person that likes to see the science behind the science fiction. I was drawn to the profession of doctor because it is so powerful. A great way to make money and a great way to support your combat professions. But I feel that buffs have ruined both PvE and PvP. I don’t see the science to support the existence of such an ability. What kind of thing can a doctor do to make you ten times stronger for a couple hours?

-first off, there is no evidence of "buffing" in any of the movies
-buffs are so powerful it makes fighting PvE boring
-and it makes fighting PvP a constant clock watching experience, or simply a no contest slaughter. An unbuffed master (enter any combat profession) couldn’t kill a buffed novice entertainer.
-Buffs aren’t just a bonus in battle, they make you 10 times as powerful, huh?!
-did Luke wait for Vader’s buffs to wear off and that is why he was able to beat him?
-buffs have made logging in and joining into a fight impossible, because you are useless (I remember a time when a master TKA couldn’t take on 2 kimogillas at once)
-doctors don’t need to buff to be one of the best professions in the game, they have always been great.

I could go on but hopefully you guys get the hint, tell me what you think.

Tell me what you think of me hitting you in the head with a sledgehammer (Power Hammer) and let me see you shrug that off.

Clearly you disagree, I wouldn't mind a brief explanation.

I can see where you have made yourself the subject of flames with this post, I must say first, an unbuffed combat master will slaughter a buffed entertainer lol, but I see you were just trying to make a point. Your correct that without buffs doctors would still have a viable proffesion, in fact the sales of stims would skyrocket, so the credflow would still be there, there is no real science behind it, just another layer of the game, well adrenaline can increase your responses, streangth, abillity to fight through shock and pain, there are a few other significant responses to chemicals and hormones that exist if you want some science, but there is no corolation between reality and a game. Buffs have made a neggative impact on some parts of the game, they arebit much, should be ballanced, which Im sure will happen. Imagineif in some of those strategy shooters(battlefield, the new battlefront)had a medic class thatcould deliver buffs of the magnitude we have in gallaxies, man that would take some fun out of it, pp that can take asmuch abuse as a tank, scary.

Hitting people in the head with sledgehammers would kill someone instantly (in the movies). This, of course, isn't the case in the game. Game does not equal movie...simple as that.

Just because Buffs aren't in the movies, doesn't mean they should not part of Star Wars Galaxies. In the movies, there aren't hundreds of Jedi running around yelling 'im l33t' and killing all the Rebels and Imperials. In the movies, there's no evidence of the existence of Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn, G-5PO, Nightsisters, Holocrons... every form of EU adds something to Star Wars, and Galaxies is just another form of EU. Buffs don't off-set the game too much, because people use them and so everyone is on a level playing field. Buffs don't make you hit for more damage, they don't make you better at dodging or attacking, they don't make you do different damage types, they just increase how much damage you can take before you're knocked out. Similar drugs are around on Earth, that allow people to ignore pain and so they can carry on fighting for longer (these drugs are illegal, of course, but various govenments are testing them for armed forces and such) - buffs are just the Star Wars equivilant of that.

OK since my original post was too much for you to understand.

This is a game...not the movies.

In the movies everyone was either a one-shot killer or dead in one shot.

Is that the case in this game?

In the movies there are only 2 Jedi. Ben and Yoda in Epi IV, Yoda in V, Yoda in the begining of VI and Luke at the end of VI.

Is that the case in this game?

In the movies only bounty hunters and STs walked around in armor.

Is that the case in this game?

Thanks for the actual response y-osa.

Despite the lack of realism that buffs represent they off set the game too much. And i dont see how the doctor forum is the wrong place to bring this up.

This game has slowly evolved into one where buffs are more of a neccesity rather than a luxary. Without buffs, we would be confined to combat with gubbers and their likes. Imagine trying to master a combat profession on meatlumps. Eventending toharvestors can be a life or death situation at times. A while back, I read a forum post where a graul mauler spawnhappened to beright next toa towns shuttleport.

Unless gameplay is majorly revamped, buffs will have to remain abig part of this game. I guess all the devs can do is try and work on some sort of sytem where buffs are more realistic - we just have to wait and see what they can conjure up (and it better be bloody good coz it has been pushed back for long enough)

Hey guys, thanks for the review on what happened in the star wars movies, i haven't seen them in a while...

I played in the first 3 months of the game when no one had buffs. It was better in every way. Hunting groups had to be more diverce to support each other, and people acctually died now and then. Before buffs i mastered 3 combat professions ina month, it wasn't hard, just a little more interesting than spamming your best move, leaving the computer, and coming back to two dead kimogillas.
