Thread: Devs: Preserve Buff States When Not Online

This applies to all buff states but is particularly important when it comes to medical enhancements.

Buff states should be preserved when not online, the same way that they are in Everquest. When someone pays a doc for 3 hours of buffed stats, they should get the whole 3 hours(unless they die AND clone. buffs should also be preserved thru resuscitation, but that's a seperate issue). You guys need to stop underestimating the importance of this issue. It's a critical issue to all players, but especially casual players who don't want to feel obligated to play 3 solid hours due to guilt over wasting any buffed time.

Example: Today my tire blew out on the way in to work. I get in to work and work all day, but now I need to take care of my tire and get it fixed, which means I need a ride. I call my brother and find that he's playing SWG and just got buffed. Now, if buffs were preserved by saving the amounts and associated timers when a character goes LD and then logs off, there would be zero problem here. No friction at all: my bro could just log off, we could take care of stuff, and then later on tonight he could log back on and still have 2.8 hours of buff left. But as it is, he is presented with the dilemma between not wasting 15k in SWG and helping me get the deal done with my car at this moment.

But that's just my situation. I am sure every single person on this forum can name one time where they felt torn between getting something done in RL versus getting maximum usage out of their buffs. Always I hear people say that I'll do something "when my buffs run out". What do I have to do to get this on the near-term to-do list for the developers? Beg? Say pretty please? I'm open to suggestions... this really REALLY needs to be implemented. It would help out the game so much if people didn't have to worry about their buffs so much. Buffs make the world go round in SWG. The priority on this issue needs to be bumped up a notch. Or two. Or however many notches it takes to get it into publish 10.

I've put lots of thought into this and I have to disagree.

In Everquest people were just logging off to preserve buffs and logging back on every 30 minutes to make sure they got a spawn, without having to leave after 3 hours because they were running out of buffs. Same thing would happen here. I think the drawbacks outbalance the advantages of keeping buffs when offline, I'd rather have to spend 10k again when I log back on than seeing farmers and campers taking advantage of it.

Sorry im not flaming your idea here or anything, but if your brother wont log off star wars cause hes buffed to help you fix his car (I doubt this has happned!) he deserves to get a /backhand in real life! I would kick my bro's ass if he did that to me

Yea, its anoying, but if he wont give you a ride, cause he'll be out of, oh nos, 10k credits, which is 1 mission, he seriously has problems with this game. I would care more about, having the timers stay up when you go LD, cause the buffs stay unless you're not logged on for X ammount of time, but if you go LD and relog right away, the timer disppears, and then you dont know how much time is left on em.

Amen! It's not an issue of whether buffs should stay or not, it's whether some people have a grip on reality or not

No buffs should not be like this. it would effect to many other things in the game, the game is constantly running so u have to pay maint on harvesters, house etc for a period of use, buff last a fixed time etc

if you made buff states preserved you'd have to do the same with all the other "duration" things in the game like harvesters, houses etc

and if your bro puts a game before RL thats just sad, I'd give him a kick up the ass and say get a life lol

This thread is completely amazing to me. How so many people could miss the point and not ONE get it truly does suprise me. It seems people are far moreinterested in bashing the person in my example than seeing that the dilemma it illustrates, no matter how simple you think the answer is, could and should be prevented from even occuring.

Comparing buff timer state saving to harvesters somehow really takes the cake though. I mean, wow. How on earth do you figure those are related? Those run on money and function the same on and offline. They aren't even remotely related to buff timers.

We get it but we dont agree with it, there is a difference.

Whats the dilemma? You need a ride or whatever, so what if you had just been buffed..../points to the esc key. Your brothercomes back after helping you out and gets buffed again, it is not a tough call. And 10-15k is really nothing and requires no special mention in this discussion.

Now lets address the point you are trying to make, I really cant see the problem with playing for 1hour buffed, needing to do something else and getting buffed again when you decide to start playing at a later date. It is very rare that you cant find a buffing doc at most of the major starports, not to mention the buff shacks in player cities that are springing up.

Ok, I'm kind of confused now. Buffs dont stay on you if you log out? I know a couple of times when i have lost connection, i have come back about 10 mins later and I was still buffed. The icons on my little box were gone, but i was still buffed. And it lasted for the amount of time it was supposed to. Can anyone explain?

This would have some pretty nasty ramifications.

Example 1: You get buffed and go fight the Acklay (sp?). As soon as he dies, you exit the game. Then you just relog in 2 hours to kill him again. It will only take you about 10 minutes to kill him, so you can do this for the next 30 hours.

Example 2: A bunch of overts buff up and go camp an enemy player base (assuming you can find one) and logs out. Then you can just set someone to keep watch andwait till the base is empty, then log back on and take it out.

Example 2 isn't that severe. However, the situation with the Acklay is horrible.
