Thread: SWG Forum Ranking Changes...

Is there a need for PVPing in order to earn Ranking XP?

I was just thinking some more (yes, be afraid). How will the ranking system prevent the infamous "first" posts (I even see "second" posts more frequently lately). Some people are so taken by being the first to reply to a Developer post that being 1 starred by hundreds or thousands of people mean nothing to them.

I was thinking that a possible solution might be preventing someone from posting again for a certain amount of time if he/she is 1 starred on the same post over X number of times. Unfortunately this type of "punishment" probably wouldn't phase this type of person and it could also be abused by others with a grudge against someone (forum griefing).

The forum ranking system is designed to encourage productive posts, but how will it address people that don't care?

A: It may help in the short term but the more post ratings you have the less it has an effect on your ranking and will actually hurt you at the Higher post ratings. So the system naturally discourages this type of behavior.

Don't understand this?

How could a 5 star not improve your average unless you are already perfectly 5 stars across the board.

I just see the boards becoming more of a popularity contest and less a source of useful knowledge.

Also If someone 1 stars me, could I edit my post to be vulgar, then have the post deleted to remove this 1 star from my record.

Cool idea, I hope it is not taking any meeting time or man/women power away from in-game issues.

I heard Publish 16 will be revamping the Galactic Chancellor system, while Publish 17 will be revamping the way you get to Galactic Chancellor. Unfortunately, the Sig Revamp Balance and Avatar Revamp have been delayed.

If you see your self getting lots of low ratings you may go "oh wonder how I can post better to keep that from happening", or you can just choose to ignore it.

I disagree. I think it will make you go, "oh, I guess I shouldn't disagree with anyone. My opinion isn't welcome here." You could ignore it. I'd ignore it. Will everyone ignore it? I don't know. Some people take things more personally than others. I know a lot of people who avoid "the oboards" because of this sort of thing... :/

Exactly. Most people here don't use the stars as "quality of post" ranking, but rather "opinion like mine" ranking. too bad....

I agree with this. People are overall too concerned about their star rating/forum ranking. I also believe this will discourage people from suggesting things that go against the popular opinion.

This might be a good idea if stars actually meant anything, but unfortunately they don't. If you post anything at all in the ID as an image designer you *will* get one-starred by a lot of people who are angry at the image design changes. I suspect that we will see the same thing in the tailor forum once 0 and 1 condition clothing is unequipable (I remeber it happened a lot when decay was added to the system because that was blamed on tailors). As long as the star system can be used by one-star bandits, they don't mean anything.

Looks interesting. Out of curiousity, will the time/post/star rank priveleges be kept track of "behind the scenes" for people with special titles like correspondants or the Interior Decorators, or will some other system handle those?

As for the star ranking, I think that the "one star ninjas" should be handled like this:

  1. Don't change their forum title, otherwise some people will go for it just for "bragging rights". I don't understand it, but I expect that would happen.

  2. Once a poster gets flagged as a 1SN, they cannot rate any posts until:

    • A certain period of time goes by (maybe a month or two)

      • or

    • They meet some minimum post/rating requirement (counting only posts after the flag gets raised). Say at least 20 posts, and a 3.0 average rating from75 differentpeople. This would keep 1SNs from using their own alternate accounts to "redeem" themselves.

And to the "why are they spending time on this instead of game system X" people: do you really think the SWG developers are the ones dealing with forum issues?

Oh, and finally, I think correspondants, admins, and devs should get the ability to give 6 stars. Because we're just cool like that.

This is an answer to similar questions...

Most forum users have an average rating of 2.5 (right in the middle) with about 20 % over 3.0 and only 5% below 1.5. This alone proves that one star bandits (even for those that have stated that they get one starred a lot) do not have much of an effect. We KNOW that this is the average rating and that is why we posted this thread, the ratings are high at the moment but as I said we will lower the requirements if necessary. I am waiting for my metrics to update this week then we will decide ifwe want to lower the minimum rating for the star rated tree.

As I also said we are working with lithium and if possible we WILL have a "one star bandit" rating this would not be something you could get by just rating 5 post with a one star out of 500 you rated.

I completely agree, i think people (myself included) purposely avoid posting in certain boards even thoughthey may have a valid opinion simply because his/her opinions are not welcome.

The problem isnt that this will turn into a popularity contest, its just that those who spend time and effortto construct their posts in a reasonable and well thought out manner often get 1 starred simply because they bring an alternate view to the discussion and ask people to contemplate other alternatives. Allot of people dont like this and often give negative ratings just because they dont like what they are hearing, not the manner in which it as writen.

Very nice!

I like it!

A Suggestion: Take the 1 from the rating system. Everybody can only get 2-5 stars

I hope, you will title the 1-star bandits! And I hope, they become an unchangable avatar so long, they give one stars.
