Yeah, I use Netscape 7.02 as my browser. The reason none of the formatting tools will show up is cause Netscape default loads (and appears to only be able to use) the HTML editer version from IE. It doesn't have the graphical editer, so you do have to use HTML coding, but I'm unsure if it's identical to what your probably used to. I've never actually used HTML until I started posting on these boards.

I learned how to do the HTML stuff by quoting other people's posts and then looking through their text to find the HTML code entries.

hankfuully I know alpt about basic html(but I heard its slightly different version on the boards) so I'll continue to experiment but somethign should be done for the less knowledgable members of the community who dont use the god awfull IE.

This doesn't seem to be working correctly because I know I qualify for a higher ranking than I'm at. What's going on?

Err, LordMontezuma, if your talking about the titles on the front page of this forum, they haven't been put in yet. We're still going off from the old one. But otherwise, yeah, you gotta wait 9 months to hit Community Elder.

Hmm, actually,

12+9=8(going with months of the year, here ) meaning you should already have the title. I dunno what to tell ya. You aren't getting yours on time (late) to and I got mine early. Hehe... maybe they did something to the system while getting this new one setup? /shrug

Edit: Oh, I know what the problem is You don't have enough posts yet! lol

He has the posts (you need 250 for elder, 350 for leader, right now that is), but his registration date is on the 26th. It is not the 26th of September yet.

3. Why are you doing this?

A: We want to encourage to post more responsibly and using the time/post count along with the rating system we can do this. We will also be granting icons, titles and even some privileges based on the new rankings.

I think the biggest problem with this system is thatanything tied tothe star rating systemis unlikely to achieve your goal of more responsible posting. Here's why:

  • Everybody wants to be a star - Simply put, everyone will want the highest rank attainable, regarless of whether it comes with privledges or not. We just want higher...higher is better. This greed (for lack of a better word) will drive people to any type of posting necessary just to garner good star rankings. It will take approx. 5 seconds after this system goes live, for the "5 stars all-around" posts to start going up all over the place. Instead of just having idle posts, that serve no purpose other than community-building (a.k.a. grind threads), there will be idle posts in which everyone just 5-star's each other all the time. You're right that the occasional 1-star bandit won't have much of an effect in this system, which is why star grinding threads will be so successful. Sure, the mods can delete and/or lock them, but they can only do so much, and as it is now, many, many of these threads fall through the cracks and are left untouched.

  • What's popular isn't always right... - And so the old addage goes. It's very easy to get people to 5-star your posts. First, you go into the jedi forums and complain about how long the grind is. Then, you can hop over to the BH forum, and complain about not being able to kill jedi. Hop onto any dev post and make obnoxious, unrelated complaints about whatever broken system you're mad about today. A trip to the JTL boards, and you can start posting about howeveryone deserves to be in beta, or why you feel the combat balance is more important. Finally, a stop at your friendly neighborhood galaxy board, where you can post such enlightened topics as "SOE b teh SUXXOR," "Why do I pay for this SH1TE!!" and "CSR's are useless!!!111!!!." While making these rounds, you can gather yourself plenty of popularity points, and lots of 5-stars to boot. But in the whole process, you've never really added anything substansive to the community, you're just stirring the pot, so to speak.

  • What's right isn't always popular - A sure-fire way to get yourself mixed results and garner hatred is to actually be a contributing member of the community and express intelligent opinions about things. The types of "responsible posts" that you're expecting will not be those rewarded in this proposal. Need examples? Just check out some of the responses to the "How to become a Jedi." post by Triforcer. This is perhaps one of the best, most philosophical, most enlightened posts I have ever read. It's about human decency, being neighborly, and kind, thoughtless and giving....It's about what it means to be the kind of person archetyped by the "jedi" in the star wars universe. But how was that recieved? Not only did the majority of the responders totally miss the point, they began trashing it as well. Such a post would more than likely end up with a 3 star average rating when all the dust settled, as there will be strong opinions on both sides (especially when the post is something controversial, and not just misunderstood). The system you propose discourages such posts, in favor of ones that would be better recieved by the majority of others.

Discussion is good. Disagreement is good. The purpose of these forums is not simply to pat each other on the back and say great things about SWG. It's about the free exchange of ideas, and healthy discussions which will, in the end, yield a better product. My fear is that many (not all, but some) who do their best to actually contribute substansively to the community may be lured away from saying anything controversial, and in so doing, they will be taking away a vital part of these forums. The allure of more prestigious titles is powerful indeed, and basing these titles on popularity will do nothing to better the quality of posts overall. All it will do is make popularity of prime importance when posting, leading to a group of the best posters having mediocre titles (because they don't care) and a plethora of those posting only when it will be well-recieved, so as not to hurt their precious title. That will stagnate discussions, and won't help anyone in the long-run.

Holy crap that's a large post.

2. What about one star bandits (eq: those that go through one starring every post)

A: Contrary to popular belief, these are 1. rare and 2. have very little effect on the rating or ranking systems. The only thing it hurts is the bandits wrist. It takes 20 1 star ratings to cause a post to be hidden by the default system. Additionally we are putting measures in to be able to track and even "title" these posters so everyone will know who they are. When we findsomeone who abuses the rating systemwe do lower their "rating" weight to prevent abuse.

I've been the subject of a one star ninja terrorist attack. They actively went though about 30 of my posts and 1 starred them all. They actually lowered my average star rating from 3.1 to 3.0. Although it doesn't sound much it will change my rank in the new system from Squadron Leader to Pilot. As a active poster on the forums and probably spend alot more time here than in game I find this disheartening as I wear my rank badge with pride.

Hmm i liked some of the titles form before they were changed.

I dont like the new high rank titles at all, for one if i play for 4 years and average a 4 rating i dont want to be called master jedi. I have a deep down hatred for jedi in this game and dont see being titled as one as a reward hehe. Also it does little to help others who are looking to ask a long standing player and respected player questions.

All it does is give you a prety title which to be honest isnt a good title at all.

I think the rating related ranks should all have titles that relate to the quality of the posts, and that they are constructive, informative and knowledgable posters, not a pilot/squadren leader/jedi.

Such example of rating related rank names:

Community Representative

SWG Elder

Community Master

SWG Representative

Things like that which highlight the posters ability to post consise, informative and constructive posts so those seeking advice know when someone knoeldgable and respected for their input is posting, not someone with a jedi title.
