Thread: Weekly Roundtable Discussion (Week Ending 2-16-04)
It seems to me now that the only definate thing being forced on players is a change in playstyle and it is human nature to resist change.

It's been said before, the Developers will not force PvP onto any player (regardless of their preference for PvE or PvP). While you apparently don't realize it, the Developers are standing by this philosophy, and will continue to do so. This new publish adds many new aspects to the existing PvP system. The change in the PvP philosophy ThunderHeart speaks of is the current trend toward motivating already consentingfaction membersto follow their roles more closely. Declared Rebels are being made to act the part of rebels (they will be hunted; they will need to be more cautious and secretive, etc.) and declared Imperials are being motivated to act the part of a dominating, oppressive military force (they will be Overt more, demonstrating control and a show of force).
Wrong. You are very clearly being forced into PvP. Why do I say that?
First, there are many options available to factional players that are not available to neutral players. So much for neutral. I doubt in fact that the devs really want anyone neutral.
Second, the contraband items, namely sliced weapons and spice, are ridiculous choices. The design of the game makes these a necessity for some professions, not for PvP. Doing neutral missions with plain weapons is tedious and you'll probably blow your HAM before you complete the mission. When I'm working BE, taking DNA samples (certainly a neutral task), each sample uses -242 mind. Without a boost to mind you may as well make a career out of playing SWG to get the required XP.
In addition, you have to do a research project to know what contraband is. Every food or drink carries some boost yet there is no clear definition of spice vs food. Weapons, unless advertised as sliced or personally delivered to a slicer, don't carry any indication of that.
As I said in another post, If I choose to take a shot at an Imperial, heal a rebel, or walk into an imperial camp, I know the risks. That's the mode of play I chose at the time - no big deal. On the other hand, when I'm out sampling DNA and some roving STs find me, give me a tef, and some player comes along to finish me off; it has destroyed my game play at that point by forcing PvP (and cloning since I have few PvP skills).
With the various professions in this game there are many non-combat tasks required for moving up in the professions. Don't interrupt my play as I want to do it. It is MY play, I'm paying for it.
The Devs right now are like a single medic in a hunting party of 20. They don't know which way to turn first. Make the PvP'ers happy? Make the Starwarsy crowd happy? Make this or that profession happy? The reality is their single purpose right now should be to take the bugs out of the game. That would make a lot of people happy. Then put in new features.
As i see it the main problems on SWG at the moment:
1. Commando's new Single 2 damage. Instead of a "Guarranteed Death DOT" They have been supplied with a "Onehit kill if you dont wear an armour". Is this realy how it should be? My TKM got onehitted by a Commando when i was buffed to 3k HAM. This is soo unbalanced so either im going to shift to commando and ask all my guild to do the same.
2. Dissapearing Vehicles and Faction pets.. On a Imperial mission my Dark Trooper dissapeared 3 times when i had to run back to town to retrive it again. 1.5k extra running ![]()
3. Twi'lek's cant wear either the Tie-Fighter helmet or the AT-AT Pilot helmet. And they realy should be able to wear a stormtrooper helmet. It looks pretty rediculus as people running around with stormtrooper armours without any helmets on and still has wasted 3k FP's to buy them. (If there is any way to change race, please inform me of this as this was not what i was expecting when choosing Twi'lek)
btw. All hats for Twi'leks are for females or very feminine males....

Darn good question. And I don't find an answer anywhere in your post. How am I being forced to PvP?
First, there are many options available to factional players that are not available to neutral players. So much for neutral. I doubt in fact that the devs really want anyone neutral.
There are many optionsavailable to combat-profession players that are not available tocivilian players. So much for being an artisan, entertainer or politician. I doubt the Devs really want anyone in those classes. Darn those sneaky devs...
Second, the contraband items, namely sliced weapons and spice, are ridiculous choices. The design of the game makes these a necessity for some professions...
Necessity. Uh huh. Impossible to dance without it, for instance. No argument here.
In addition, you have to do a research project to know what contraband is. Every food or drink carries some boost yet there is no clear definition of spice vs food.
Very true! The ONLY way you can tell Food from Spice from Bantha Poodoo is to have a Master Bio-Engineer analyse it for the required 2.5 hours. Silly game design if you ask me. There is a 9 page thread on that very subject in another forum...
Weapons, unless advertised as sliced or personally delivered to a slicer, don't carry any indication of that.
True, and the Devs have apologized for that. They say sliced items will be marked after next patch.
On the other hand, when I'm out sampling DNA and some roving STs find me, give me a tef, and some player comes along to finish me off; it has destroyed my game play at that point by forcing PvP (and cloning since I have few PvP skills).
Yeah, I can relate. My game play gets destroyed repeatedly by Maulers by forcing me into combat (like you, I have few PvP skillsas well). If I want to just tend my harvesters, I should be able towithout having to constantly run from Spineflap Guards! If I choose to take a shot at a Gnort, I know the risks. That's the mode of play I chose at the time - no big deal. But when I get chased by a Voritor for NO REASON, I should not have my game play destroyed by being forced into combat like that.
Don't interrupt my play as I want to do it. It is MY play, I'm paying for it.
I hear ya, friend! Let us band together, and oust this unreasonable group of developers, and have them replaced! We're paying for this game, danmit, so they must listen! Wait a moment... weren't you going to tell me how I am being forced into PvP?

The previous poster had it right. Some of us will just have to change our play styles a little. For me, that means I can no longer sit my Covert Rebel arse in an Imperial cantina and taunt the Imperial players with impunity. *shrugs* I don't know about you, but *I* certainly can not be forced into PvP. If the Devs ever tried, you can be certain I would kick and scream a lot.- K

Profession choice is independent of faction choice and unrelated. Sure, I don't have to choose to be a BE, but virtually all BE's carry spice because of the game design. So, if I want to be a BE, I need to be neutral? That's silly.
Yeah, I'm aggro'd all the time, but last time I checked, creatures weren't handing out tefs that can drag me into PvP. I know the aggro risk same as you do with your harvesters. But when that rabid shaupaut aggros me, and my bike autostores, it doesn't mean that the gnort on the way back to town is going to whip out a flame thrower and toast me. (Hmm, that might add some interesting concepts)
You're either drawn into PvP or you can choose to change your faction and/or profession to avoid it. That should not be a requirement.
Anotherproblem with this, as expressed in my first post when they asked for comments, is that the combat system is not robust enough. I can't tell an ST from a gnort until I get close enough and it's worse when on a mount or bike and they don't spawn until you're on top of them. Combat without a map or good scouting ability is a joke. It's one thing to have an identified area, it's another thing to have random spawns at starports.
As another said, I'm not going to condemn it unless it really starts being a nuisance. I'm okay with modifying my playstyle within reason.
urapnes,
if u have nothing constructive to say, then dont say it. this isnt the movies, this is about a game that has pretty much made profession after profession useless. i only suggested a possible solution to help "fix" a part of a dead profession.
oh i forgot people are 2 used to riding around on bikes, not worried about dying on the hardest planets this game has to offer as they can just fly by and laugh asmob after mob tries in vain to hit u. personally i think thats utter crap and destroys the "feel" of the game. not to mention that 2 many people abused the bleed shots then jumped on their bikes to kite around till the mobs were about dead which ultimately got the bleedshots completely nerfed......
well done players.
but anyway, it isnt my game, nor my place to tell them what to do. *shrugs*

Can't remove prenerf guns from crates!!!
@#$%'en BRUTAL! What the hell gets into devs brains? Why the hell do you mess with ppls inventories like this? I lost a large number of crates as well AS HUNDREDS OF OTHER PPL HAVE and I'm being punished for having enough foresight as a busniess owner to stockpile and sell these prenefs! Don't #$%#'en punish me for my intelligence. These prenefs etc are all part of the game. Its what creates a free market system. I can't tell you how livid I am about this latest stunt by these moronic devs. When will they learn that these are the things that cause them to loose customers! Ppl quit over things like this when they play a boring game already and only stay in it in the hopes of better things to come. This pushes ppl over the edge and they cancel subscriptions.
All these guns would have decayed over time naturally. THey should have just let that happen.
What a @#$%'en JOKE! STOP PISSING PPL OFF AND REVERSE THIS RIGHT AWAY and how about a dev apology for no warning a quick reversal on this issue. Is that to much to ask?
TH and Devs this is not good. You will lose many, many people over this. If this is a mistake please fix it quickly. As another poster stated other Pre nerfs from previous nerfs are still in the game (T21's and Probots).
