Thread: Weekly Roundtable Discussion (Week Ending 2-16-04)
What is going on?!
Patch notes are on the main SWG website. Select Updates/Recent Updates from the menu on the left hand side. This link should get you to them also.

Tempest is now up and running, and historically works pretty well. Eclipse always seems to have special issues that keep it down, and Wanderhome seems to be cursed as ALWAYS amoung the last 3 servers to be online. Today is no exception. Both Eclipse and Wanderhome are still downa full hour after over half the servers were up.

Don't bother using the Launchpad for server status. Even when it is working it only updates every X minutes and is usually out of date. The server status page on the main website seems to be pretty accurate. At least it has been today. One problem with it though is that it doesn't differentiate between "Loading" and Online servers.
It's on the left hand side under Support -> Network Status

I noticed in the publish notes thatarmor hole and area attack combat bug has not been fixed.ETA? It's not really fun to fight in PvP when a master rifleman can incap an opponent that is buffed in one shot using that exploit.

So, there is, in fact, a change in PvP philosophy? And this philosophy is that anyone who joins a faction is consenting to PvP?
If this is the case, then it's really too bad. I enjoyed taking part in the monthly story arcs and being factioned. I just don't like PvP and I had that choice as a covert.
No, Lysiria. The developers have always maintained that PvP must be voluntary and consentual. You must choose to participate in the Galactic Civil War. Once you have chosen to do so, your could significantly reduce your exposure to PvP by electing to stay Covert, but there was always some risk once declared.
I believe the change in the PvP philosophy ThunderHeart speaks of is the current trend toward motivating already consenting PvP'ers to follow their roles more closely. Declared Rebels are being made to act the part of rebels (they will be hunted; they will need to be more cautious and secretive, etc.) and declared Imperials are being motivated to act the part of a dominating, oppressive military force (they will be Overt more, demonstrating control and a show of force).
It is indeed a major shift! And most players, while they are reserving judgement, are optimistic about the results. We shall see. But rest assured, Lysiria - the developers long standing philosophy that anyone who joins a faction is voluntarily risking PvP hasn't changed. And those risks aren't increased that much by this most recent publish. Choosing to be Covert will still reduce your PvP exposure dramatically, as it always has.

I'd have hoped that the change in PvP philosophy, rather than the possibility of throwing it out the window, would've been done slowly, with more thought and with considerable public discussion. As it is, you're hurting PvEers by giving PvPers yet another way to grief, and saying that the GCW is the purview of PvPers. Rather than implemented yet another system that throws PvE coverts into PvP, you should be thinking of ways to encourage PvP coverts to play overt.
A few days ago, I started working on a neutral character on a different server, as I expect this crackdown will be unacceptable to my playstyle, and I'll ride it out with the neutral until it's rolled-back. My first experience with the crackdown was disappointing. When I entered the cantina in Mos Eisley, there was an Imperial ST npc talking the type of smack I'd expect from a 12-year old uber dude. The dialogue consisted of little more than name calling and was far from Star Warsy.

I don't spend that much time here anymore, but I was surprised to see that it was changed. You really need to change the colors on the already viewed threads and on the dates, dark gray on black makes for lots of eye strain. I have to highligt the date to be able to read it at all....
This this post. They just introduced a new imperial based "skin" for the forums. You can easily change it back; I did as soon as I noticed the change.

Hey Thunderheart,
With the recent crackdown there have been a number of posts dealing with PvP, "Forced PvP", and other such things. What I want to know is:
Is it the developers vision that players who join a faction arethen declared as PvP, or is there a PvE path (within either faction) for those of us who wish to follow it?

I'm starting to like this approach.
I'm trying to not get all hysterical about things that haven't even happened yet.
I will still voice my concerns about things I think would be bad for the game in the future and as well as in the present, but I'm trying to quell my paranoia about where the game is going.
The devs are starting to win my trust a bit.
- Communicating better about things they should, while not revealing all the tricks they have up their sleeve
- Listening to the complaints of the players andchanging what isn't liked (albeit very slowly, but I think they are starting to speed up about that and being more responsive).
They have not spelled out all of the details of the Imperial Crackdown, nor should they.
I'll take TH's word that if some of the changes don't work out, they will be changed.
If anyone's read my posts, they'd know that I'm no dev fanboy.
I just think I'm starting to see that they are not as incompetent as I've thought they were from time to time.
I think they really are trying to make this game as good as it can be.
It's been through pretty horrendous growing pains, but the pieces are starting to come together.

I might be concerned about forced PvP, but the simple fact is that the rebels killed all the Imperial NPCs one Naritus within the first couple of hours after the server came up. At least, I could not find any imperials in Kaadara (the nifty new base outside the city was empty),Theed, Coronet, Mining Outpost on Dantooine. The members of my guild tried several other cities and could find nothing. I had to come to the forms to find out where the Imperials are hiding, only to find out that, like on my server, the Imperial Crackdown is little more than a first-come first-served faction farm for rebels who log on early.
So much for outcomes living up to even meager expectations. I am not sure if the developers cut back on the spawn rates because of early problems, but if they did, I surely hope they bump them up a little bit. I saw, as always, many more Overt rebels than I did Overt imperials, with the exception of a group of a eight or so imperials that it took to take down a single rebel TKM. (That battle was kind of like watching the Keystone Cops!)
