Thread: Skill tapes questions...

Someone offered me a +1 to mind enhancement for 25K. Is that a good deal?

I think that you can't stack skill tapes. Like if I put a +1 and a +3 on a piece of clothing, only one of them would be counted. Does anyone know...
Will they stack?
Is the higher one counted or the lower, or is it random?
If I put one on a pair of shoes and one on a leotard will they both be counted?

Erm, I would say no about the +1.

Tapes do not stack in the same article of clothing. And don't bother putting another tape in an Exquisite Leotard since it will obliterate the +5. I found that out the hard way.

My outfit is my leotard (+16 now--thought it would be +21!), sandals (+5), and lekku wrap (+4) for a total of +25.

Skill tapes are still pretty weird. There's a nice thread or linksomewhere on these forums that goes into pretty explicit details covering all the supposed 'rules' of how they actually work (regardless of how they're supposed to), but I'll try to cover your questions here as best I can.

You're correct that right now skill tapes of the same skill mod will not stack in a single clothing item. By all accounts, this is a bug and supposed to be fixed, but... well, you know. If I had 5 credits for every bug that needed fixing...

If you were to place a Dancing Mind Enhancement +1 tape and a +3 tape in the same piece of clothing, the one that you place in the clothing first is the mod that will 'stick'. Put the +1 in first, then the +3, you'll have just wasted a perfectly good +3 skill tape because only the +1 put in first will be recognized. Putting SEA's in multiple articles of clothing will stack correctly, so putting a +3 tape in a skirt and a +1 tape in a lekku wrap, for example, will stillgive you +4 skill whenboth garments are worn.

Multi-mod tapes are where things start to get really weird with how they work, and if you have further questions about that, I'd hunt down that thread I mentioned.

Skill tape prices will, of course, vary from server to server. I don't personally even botherbuying +1 tapes anymore, since the goal is to reach +25, and there are only so many garments that can be worn at once.

Thanks, I guess now I just have to go out and try to find myself some skill tapes. Mind enhancing tapes are really hard to find. I've only ever seen or hear of 2 on my server and they were pretty low.

What would be a good tape and how much should I expect to pay in general?

I like to think of a 'good' tape as being one that will fit in with a plan for a buffing outfit that you have in mind. Basically, figure out what outfit you'd like to be your buffing outfit, see how many articles of clothing in that outfit can have sockets, and just divide out the target +25 bythe number of pieces. Example: if your buffing outfit is going to have 5 articles of clothing with sockets, start by shooting for +5 tapes minimum, as 5 of those in 5 garments will hit +25. Then, if you do come across a really good tape (+10 or more... they can go up to +25 on a single tape, but they're raaaaare), you can go easier on the other bonus requirements. My strategy has been to not put a single tape in any garment until I collect up all of the needed tapes for a +25 outfit, and then making sure.

The problem of course is that tapes of even +5 or more start selling for really incredible prices, which are out of the reach of most entertainer incomes. On Ahazi, for example, tapes with really useful mods of +5 or more start selling for around 1 million per point, give or take 200k. And I have to wonder... if I spent 25 million credits for +25 in skill tapes, would I ever be able to make that back by selling buffs? How many buffs would I have to sell, at even 10k apiece for a 125% buff (vs. the usual going rate of 5k for a 100% buff), to make up the costs? I'd be seeing 5k more per buff, so I'd have to sell 5000 buffs just to break even on my investment. Assuming a non-stop buffing line, at4 minutes per buff (3 1/2 to do the buff, and 30 seconds to move to the next customer and get them going), that's (4 x 5000) 20,000 minutes of non-stop buffing, or 333.33 hours. Kinda doesn't make financial sense to me... but maybe the economy will shift out of these inflated prices?

No, I think it's more along the lines of a status thing, and if I had 25 million to burn just to say I had 125% buffs, it might be worth it. Now, where did I leave that spare 25 million I had tucked away for a rainy day....

With inflation like this on a dancer's budget, I think it realistically doesn't come down to buying the needed tapes. I've had some gifts of +3 tapes, and I do go out hunting, so I could get lucky and loot one for myself. I'm not holding my breath that I'll be able to afford high-mod tapes off the trade/auction forums, even though by dancer standards I'm in strong financial shape.

Of course I'll help... you said pls.

Granted, there are a lot of different skill mods available on SEA's in SWG, as there are a lot of different skills available to players. As this is the Dancer Forum, I'll cover only the relevant dancer skills available on skill tapes.

  • Dancing Mind Enhancement - This skill mod adds to the percentage of a dancer's buff by 1% for every 'plus' on the SEA. At high skill bonuses, it also has the secondary effect of making dancers who see these tapes on galaxy trade forums wish they'd ever come even close tohaving the credits at their disposal to purchase the inflated asking prices.

  • Battle Fatigue Healing (dance) - This skill mod increases the rate at which Battle Fatigue is healed by the dancer while dancing.

  • Wound Healing (dance) - This skill mod increases the rate at whichMind woundsare healed by the dancer while dancing. At high skill bonuses, it also has the secondary effect of making dancers who loot them use the /cry emote that it was not a Dancing Mind Enhancement tape instead of one for a skill which already heals far more quickly than Battle Fatigue (and a skill which Bio Engineers can prepare clothing tissues for, making a +25 cap of this skill readily available for inexpensive purchase), and is therefore next to useless. On a personal note, I did indeed /cry when I looted a +6 Wound Healing (dance) clothing attachment last week, so the secondary effect has been tested, and is working as intended.

Thanks for the question!
