Thread: Default Deny Service

I haven't read the dancer forums that much, so if this has been proposed before, I am sorry.

It seems like there are (at least) two major problems with the entertainer professions.

1) People who go AFK to get experience, using macros

2) Lack of control over who gets entertainer services (with implications on tips and opposing factions and guilds using you or holo-tainers to heal)

The present system of deny service is simply not efficient to micromanage everybody who you want to exclude, especially how AFK entertainers are more than adequate to heal people in the major cities.

A proposed solution to this would be to switch the /denyservice to be an /allowservice. In particular, by default you heal nobody, and you have to explicitly /allowservice somebody for them to be healed. This would help as:

1) AFK entertainers no longer directly get healing experience, unless grouped with a non-AFK entertainer

2) It is much easier to say "I'd be happy to help you out, and I'd appreciate a tip" rather than "tip me or I will deny service to you" (which few people ever do for something as petty as no tip)

3) Entertainers have much more control over who they are helping. For example, during a guild raid, the entertainer can allow service all friendly people, then concentrate on other things such as mind buffing, rather than constantly watching for an enemy to enter the door and denying service them.

4) It might force some clients to interact (with at least one sentence of "can I get a heal"), if they are not noticed upon entry, which might help the social aspect of cantinas (you can't just dodge in for a quick heal and hope nobody notices you)

And finally, a positive aspect of this is that I imagine it would be easy for the devs to implement (simply put a "not" flag in front of a existing few variables and checks).

Of course this would anger the combat types who currently enjoy our services for free, but that is the point isn't it? Does anybody have any thoughts on this idea?

I had thought about this myself but came to the conclusion that while it would work, it would be too much of a crazy hassle to the Entertainer to be worth it unless as an "all else fails" solution to afking. I, in all honesty, think it is too extreme as you have proposed it, although it is an idea in the right direction.

I do,however, think all buffs, even passive ones, need to be given only with specific targeted consent by the Entertainer.

In other words, you have to do something like a /setperf on *anyone* you have to buff. It is just that, you can /setperf anyone who are you grouped with(so you can still do multi-person buffs).

This would, at the very least, eliminate buff bots but still allow afk entertainers to heal for xp *and* make things easier to manage for the entertainer. Most of the afk for xp issues will go away once hologrinding stops, its really only going to be the afk buff bots that will be the biggest hassle left. And requiring a targeted /setperf for any buff would resolve that.

Utess, I'm sorry to say, but requiring an active /setperf will not stop buff-bots. I know this because currently doctors need to actively target the recipient of their buffs, and they have buff bots. (I won't go into detail in this post to prevent the propagation of this knowledge, but if one really wanted to, I'm sure the doctor's forum has this information.)

As for being to drastic, I do not believe this is the case. Granted I have only had a short career as a performer, but in Coronet, I have seen maybe 6 people come in and out. It would be easy to take a few seconds to target the person, and /allowService somebody (maybe even macro the command) if you so choose. Not to mention that if you are not the only entertainer, dividing the demand divided among the entertainers would not be hard.

However, like I said, I have not been a dancer for long, so there might be implications I am missing. And if one or two other dancers/musicians/entertainers say "it would be too much of a headache", I'm inclined to believe you...

I used to hate this idea. Search some of my posts for my vehement arguments, but they boiled down to the unrealistic nature of denying service and the logistical nightmare it can be to select people in an audience.

Fortunately, I can withdraw those complaints as I will soon be a nonplayer.

And to be honest, I don't think things can be worse by having targeted performs. Some may grief by getting up in your face and prevent you from doing your job, but those people will grief you in a variety of ways anyway.

For the most part, people will back away from you if you say, "Hey, I need to see all of you if I'm to do my job." So, that logistics nightmare can be made to a mere annoyance.

Consider me reversing my position on this matter.

But it won't stop the AFKers, if that's your hope. As pointed out, people can group, and macros can cycle through people in a group and run commands. Buffbots will become group heal bots.

Of course, if /danceheal was radial menu only, then that'll help. I hate that idea because it can be such a pain in a crowded cantina, but I'm more open to it.

Love Star Wars, but the few role-players I could find on the servers were outnumbered by powergamers who wanted only l337 l00t and mad skillz. I can't justify paying $15 a month to play a game by myself.
Still cares enough to interject an opinion, though.

I have a master musician on Tarq and a master dancer on Sunrunner and I don't like this idea at all to hard to target people in a crowd to give them /allowservice and trying to type /allowservice and the name of the person is to much specially if spatial chat is running though fast like it normally does in a crowded place. Don't like /denyservice either have yet to use it and don't see any reason for me to use it in the future either.
I get to easily distracted between typing/chatting with friends, TS/chatting with other friends, kids runnign around the house, brother coming in wanting to chat, TV going behind me to even think about having to even think about having to first find the person in a crowd and then /allowservice them even with it hotkeyed I'll miss to many people asking for heals.

I definitely like the intentions of your idea. However, I have to chime in with others who think it won't be very feasible to do, especially in the very crowded cantinas, and especially if you're actually trying to do a performance at the same time. I don't see anything inherently wrong with a patron coming in and watching who they want to watch. It makes real-life and roleplay sense. I never really even cared one way or the other on /denyservice. But, it honestly didn't appear to me to be realistic to deny anyone service. After all, you can't really do this in real life. Now, if they had a bouncer profession? Maybe, heh. But, it's not like you can actually just blind someone or deafen someone to keep them from watching you (Although, hey, that might be cool if we had that power, lol). But, I agree that this would be too much of a hassle for a dancer. I can even see some nights when I'm feeling lazy and just want to dance and not worry about targeting or whatever (usually when I drop my master title because I don't feel like giving out buffs because I'm tired or whatever), and the thought of having to target every single person that walks in the door would just make me not go in the first place.

Having said that, I do think certain things should require more active participation by the entertainers. And, using your idea for things like this would be a good thing. Buffs, for example. I know that you can pretty much macro anything. But, I think, as someone pointed out, if this option were taken out for buffing, and instead required a manual radial dial action, thereby preventing afk'ers from buffing, I'd be all for that.
