Thread: More dancing thoughts..
In talented hands, fans have been known to be deadly weapons in rl. Why not in game? Although I don't mind training for other combat abilities, the idea is intriguing. We could learn dances for them and attain some combat skills with them as well.

I love the idea of the fans being used as weapons! I mean, if we're pure dancers we should be experts in combat, but should be certified to weild them once we get to a certain level.
Then, the rest would be like Wookiees and weaponsmithing / armorsmithing. As far as I know, only Wookiees can craft bowcasters and wookiee armor. So, only dancers can be certified to weild fans, but we'd need a brawler profession to be good at using them in combat. Not sure if it would be TKA or Fencer...
Still, it gives dancers the incentive to pick up a combat class, yet still seem like a dancer ![]()
A long time ago when I was playing EQ I choose the Enchanter class. The enchanterrs, in case you don't know, were basically a hybrid class. WHat I mean by that is they had a few offensive and defensive abilities. They weren't nukers or tanks. They couldn't heal. What they were, if played properly, were traffic control. A well played Enchanter controlled the pace of the battle. Now it's been a long time since I played EQ so I don't know how the class has mutated over time, but my guess is that not much.
I would agree that the specials that the entertainers get should not be used as attacks per se, but if they could be used to mes, stun, root, blind, debuff, etc various MOBS then it would help make the pure entertainer characters more usefull in combat.
I personally have no desire to learn to fight. I'm honest with myself. I'm not good at it, so I don't try. That's why in most of the games (EQ, DAOC to name a couple) I've always played the support/buffer/healing classes. That is what I'm good at.
While I don't see it as critically necessary, it would be nice if some of the abilities granted these classes could be usefull in the field as part of a group dynamic. Just my two electrons worth.

i disagree with all the smoke boms and what not being used for weapons for dancers. thats what the combat professions are for. you want to be able to protect your self? pick up a few brawler or marksmen skills. thats' what it's for. don't have to master them, just work on a couple of the boxes in one of the tiers. but for dancers to be given some special weapon even thought they have no combat skills? that defeats the pupose of the combat classes. all you have to do is take some time away from dancing and go right outside the city and shoot the low level creaturs that rarly hit you back, and your set. it's very easy and it's not impossible to do. if you dont want to do this, then you cant complain and you can go right back to 'relyin' on someone that is in a combat profession to help you travel. you know, you can always buy a vehicle to get you where you need to go and you can avoid most argo creatures if you pay attention enought.

I am. I'm going to master pistoleer for that reason ( and sometimes I just like to fight!). I'm taking more than "just a little time" to do it. I like to hunt on Dath. I agree that if you really want combat skills go out and learn it but it would be nice to have just a little something for those dancers who don't want full combat skills. Such as fans to wack those rude patrons in the head with. Ya know what else? Sometimes it's just fun to toss ideas around. Maybe the devs could develop a prof one level past master dancer. A Mata Hari type one that would take a lot of work to attain. If you don't want combat skills don't do it and hire out. If ya do then go for it.
By the way, almost all of us have vehicles.
Been a long time since I posted but I'm still a dancer, I'm still the same place in dancing but I no longer run cantinas. The dancing is more for religious roleplay. But I still care what happens.
I have come out against combat effective dancers before and I always will.
There is no rationale that has been put forth that has ever convinced me a dancer's place is in the thick of battle. Unlike EQ you are not a Profession alone you have fluid skill points to spend where you wish. If you do not wish to spend them on combat skills then don't expect to be effective in combat. There are already benefits dancers offer in the field. Mind buffing and mind wound healing. They already get a small bonus based on their "superior" (but NOT combat trained) reflexes.
People SHOULD be dependent on other people and all classes should not be balanced out to be as effective at every other skill in every field. Why group or say hello to someone? Why have communities? Why even play online? Just buy a home game that doesn't use the net and be all that you can be. The need of other people and classes create all the reasons to group, share, build communities, make friends, etc. Right now you have more than enough to offer a combat party going out into the field. You can offer 2 things that vastly decrease downtime and improve fighting and healing.
You want your dancer to go out into the field and not have combat skills? Hire a bodyguard. I mean really. The "Fans" that people are talking about that are used as weapons are NOT dancing fans. They are metal martial arts tools. I see a fan doing damage in game it should be in the hands of a Teras Kasi artist or a brawler. THAT makes sense. They wouldn't even be good fans to dance with as heavily weighted edged metal weapons..
Smoke bomb effects? Sorry but flashpots aren't very good for carting around in the field and using nor does the smoke last well, and having you in themiddle of a small smokescreen makes you easier to find not harder. You want to see smoke on the filed then give commandos smoke grenades and code in defensive bonuses. Having a dancer dazzle someone soundssilly on a field of combat, much less in the wild where you probably just enraged a creature that's going to tear through your flimsy dance costume and eat you with a swipe. As it should for such foolishness in my opinion.
Since the game is set up to allow mulitlple skills there is no reason not to get the skills you want to be effective in the three or four arenas you'd like to dally in. Anything else is laziness, unrealistic expectation, or a severe case of the "gimmes". Dancing does not consume all skill points, dancers are not useless to combat professions, dancers have no realistic skills to offer in the actual killing of things nor do I think they should. What they can offer to the game in creativity, imagination, recreation, story depth and healing properties makes them an incredibly valuable and worthwhile class unto itself.
Improve what we have and can do, increase the depth of those skills I'd rather not have dancers becoming some unrealistic showcase special effects bait in a smoking warzone. If a dancer goes in there they had best have protection or skills to deal with it, the game certainly allows for it. They can use their vaunted social skills to have some bruisers beside them.

My only regret is that I couldn't 10 star this post.
Ok, time to ask the same thing I always do... *sigh* what would it hurt?
