Thread: a bug or working as intended?

I had a strange experience in Moenia on the live server Shadowfire and wonder if this is "working as intended" or if I should file a bug report. I was dancing outside the cantina in the "entertainer area" on the side of the cantina. Naturally the thug spawn camper went LD so the thugs started attacking me. If I tried to stop dancing either by using a stopdance hot key or by typing it out, I would get the system message, you are not currently dancing. But when I tried to attack the thugs I would get a system message telling me I could not attack while skill animating. (on my screen my character had stopped dancing)I had to actually run a few steps and then I could return fire. I very nearly had to clone before I tried to implement the "run" plan.

Anyone else have this problem? It may not be common to have entertainers outside the cantina but since some thugs will target you while you are inside the cantina (the Agro Outpost on Dant for example) this can be frustrating to say the least.

edited as I seemed to have originally given the impression this was on test center - perhaps because this has been a known issue on live for some time and I only just now discovered what everyone else has known forever. For those of you who have known about this on Live, should I bother with a bug report?

When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.

hm...

I find two things strange about this: Why would anyone camp thug spawns on a frog server?

And how could that be possibly intended?
It would be a nice feature if you stopped dancing as soon as you are under attack, that could have saved my life once or twice when I was dancing as combatant. But, only if you really stop dancing. Did you try an "implicite stopdance"? I.e. Running around?

Sorry I wasn't clear. This was on Live not a Test server so there are no "magic frogs". Also, it was only by running that I was able to convince the system that I wasn't still dancing but it took about 10 seconds for me to think of doing that - okay I was having a DUH kind of morning. In those few seconds I very nearly had to clone since they were hitting me but I was just standing there holding my gun.

The problem for me is that there seems to be a crossing of signals in the system when you are attacked while dancing. If the system thinks you are skill animating then using our provided /stopdance commands should work rather than tell you that you aren't dancing. Why would it be intended? I have no idea but that never means it isn't.

That's how entertainer works in live currently as well. When you are attcked and get hit you effectively stop dancing yet continue skill animating and as such have to move to be able to retaliate.

That sounds similar to various bugs I've seen playing music that usually involve someone doing a /changeband or /startband and you can end up in a weird state where you can see yourself playing music, but you can't /stopmusic or /startmusic but maybe you're not getting XP because the system doesn't think you're playing music, but it might not allow you to do something else because it thinks you are. When that happens the only way to clear it is to move because that finally seems to reset it into a consistent state. I can think of only one time I was ever attacked while dancing, and I quickly ran so I never noticed any problems like that. I would suggest you go ahead and /bug it. It couldn't hurt.

I have noticed that with my Musician as well.

Something that may be related is when a NPC gets to exactly 0. They just stand there, not attacking, not running. Like they are stuck inbetween states of run or fight.

It might have been due to a lagging connection to the server as well. I always had the impression that some of the "you can't xxx while yyy" messages are generated client-side, while others come from the server that also tracks the combat damage. Sometimes when I get lag spikes the client-server synchronisation gets somehow messed up and I experience rather strange effects. I haven't really tested this lately though, so I might be wrong.

Ikewe; "...on the live server Shadowfire ..."

I dunno, you seemed perfectly clear to me.

Edited; oh, you must have edited to be perfectly clear after the fact!

It has happened to me as well...and as I recall has been happening that way since shortly after live when I first had it happen.
