Thread: Call for test: (Action burned) * C = Duration buff?

Hello, after reading the various posts about the buffs, I have a hypothesis that I'd like to see tested. I may not have much chance to use this test, and one person's test may not be conclusive anyway. I'd like to ask the other dancers (and musicians too) for their assistance in this endeavor.

Based on comments that the buffs last longer as the dancer uses flourishes and special effects and that the buffs still kick in even without flourish, I am starting to suspect that the duration is a direct result of how much action we use as we /setperform.

If you would be willing to help me in this data collection, I'd really appreciate it, and I hope that we can come up with something conclusive to return to the dancer/musician community. In addition to your diligence, you will also need a guinea pig player who won't mind sitting around doing nothing (a crafter or medic would be great as they can do still do work while being subjected to your tests).

I'd say the first stage is to test the short-term effects of the buff. Test the results while burning 200 Action points. This may require a calculator on hand and careful attention to the screen as you watch your Action go down (through normal performance as well as during flourishes and lights). With your guinea pig, I suggest you do the following:

  • Perform with no flourishes until you use 200 action. Have the subject stop watching/listening. Measure the length of the buff.

  • Perform with constant flourishes until you use 200 action. Have the subject stop watching/listening. Measure the length of the buff.

  • Perform with constant special effects until you use 200 action. Have the subject stop watching/listening. Measure the length of the bfuf.

  • Perform with constant flourishes and special effects (I hope you're a fast typist and calculator operator; maybe you should bring a friend). Have the subject stop watching/listening. Measure the length of the buff.

If the buff lasts too long for patient measurements, we can reduce this value to 100. I'm honestly not sure how long such a buff will last, but I suspect it would be less than half an hour.

My hypothesis is that all four cases will result in four distinct buffs with equivalent durations.

If it turns out that my hypothesis is incorrect, then I'll have to find something else to believe in.

But if I am correct, I'd like to move on to other tests (200 action vs 400 action = 2x duration; formula we can figure out to maximize our results; etc.). But those tests will be useless to adminster if I turn out to be wrong.

So, who's with me? Who wants to help test this hypothesis and turn it into a fact? *grin*

Still cares enough to interject an opinion, though.

This cannot be the formula simply because action burned varies by how much quickness the dancer has. I routinely dance with quickness buffs and have 1500-2000 quickness so Ido NOTuse ANY action at all, zero, none. Good luck finding something to believe in

unfortunately i think hawaii is right. specials cost relates directly to quickness and with a quickness buff frequently the specials cost nothing to use, therefor no action is burned, or very little, so to reach 200 action cost when each flourish costs 1 action would require 200 flourishes, while it may require 4 flourishes for someone else.

i have tried testing 5 minutes of dancing with no flourishes and an active buff. the buff lasted around 15 minutes. 5 minutes of constant flourishing produces a buff that lasts nearly an hour.

i'd surmise 10 minutes of dancing would give a 30 minute buff. the question i'd like to know is how many flourishes/lightshows in that 10 minutes would you need to quadruple the buff duration?

we should all set a standard 10 minute time to our tests, and each pick a # of times to flourish. i am going to try to test a few buffs tonight with 5 flourishes over 10 minutes. and 5 lightshows over 10 minutes... from that maybe we can figure it all out.

*sigh* You are correct. Quickness will affect the results.

I wonder if it's related to how much action would normally be burned based on the normal costs before factoring in Quickness. But that would be very difficult (if not impossible) for us to figure out without actually seeing the code.

I guess this test is useless after all. Pity that.

well theres no reason not to test though. we can still figure it out. if your theory about the special cost was accurate then duration would also be based on the type of dance you were doing. after i do the two tests mentioned above i'll do 2 more dancing poplock2 and we'll see how those related.

Hmm, I tested yesterday the same as you but with a little different conclusion.

I danced without flourishing (exotic3), using all 10 seconds a lighteffect until my actionbar was empty (3 minutes about, I believe).

My target was buffed for17 minutes.

Out of it I made the conlclusion, that this suitsin the 1:6 ratio for the mindbuff with flourishes, and it does no matter if I flourish or do the effects.

Perhaps I have to rethink itand testing more.

Try shorter durations.

I watched a master dancer today, i had her do setperform on me, as soon as she started a flourish in exotic4 i began watching..i waited for the flourish to complete finish then stopped watching. It doubled my mind and lasted 10 minutes. Even though i only watched for maybe 10 to 12 seconds.

how about this for a test:

Master dancer using /setperform

Test#1 dance exotic4 for 60 seconds, no flourishes

Test#2 dance exotic4 for 60 seconds, with flourishes every 20 seconds

Test#3 dance exotic4 for 60 seconds, with flourishes every 10 seconds

Test#4 dance exotic4 for 120 second, no flourishes

Test#5 dance exotic4 for 120 seconds, with flourishes every 20 seconds

Test#6 dance exotic4 for 120 seconds, with flourishes every 10 seconds

For each test you do post the test and the duration of the mind buff.

Sound test... and then if you really want to get carried away, repeat one of the 120 secondtests with basic1 to how big the difference is.

Also, repeat one of the 120 second tests with things like light shows thrown in.

Wouldn't take long to at least see what factors really make a difference and which ones don't.
