Do you have to be standing right next to/on the droid for the special effect to center around you (the dancer)? Or, can you park your droid across the cantina and still have the effects surrounding you?

The effects center around the droid, not the dancer. As long as you are in the same building as the droid, it will spout off the effects around itself.

YOu can send the droid on patrol routes whilst it does its effects. careful planning and good timing can get some rather complicated displays
