Thread: An idea to stop Buffbots

I was thinking the other day and I thought that one way to decrease the number of buffbots is to have the game log you out everytime you ctrl tab out of the game. This thing happens with Final Fantasy already. Therefore the only way for buffbots to run would be to have 2 computers or not do anything on that computer 24/7.

It wouldn't stop the people who just run their buff bots when they are totally afk or who have second computers. It would work for people who run multiple accounts on one machine, but there are some legitimate uses for that. Plus, they could always just run in window mode, unless you took that out too which would bother some people who really like to use that.

Myself, I'd hate to see alt+tabbing go because a lot of times I minimize the game to message people on msn, etc. It is a nice idea, but I just don't think it would be effective enough to be worth the cons of removing it =/

I'm always alt'ing out to change Teamspeak rooms, check resources on SWGCraft.com, or to check my auction in the trade forums.

Giving me the boot for alt'ing out would make life a living hell for my weaponsmith.

Personaly, I'm hoping that /register is the key thing that's been keeping the Dev's from killing the bot's once and for all. Get that into live, and there's no reasonto justify the existance of bots.

I too use alt-tab to visit swgcraft.com a lot. And the Fashions by TK site when I'm ordering clothes (all the tailors I know use his color code system). But I'd be willing to give it up if this were an effective and efficient way of getting rid of AFKers. I'd give up a LOT to see them gone. But I don't think this would be all that effective, really.

I'm curious, though, about the previous post. Va-Mei, how do you see /register killing buffbots?

I don't think va-mei thinks /register will kill buff bots. The point was this was a mechanic that needed to work before they could kill buff bots. It removes the complaint thatthey can't find a liveperformer and MUST have bots.

It would be nice if the /register command would not work if you were AFK.

it would anger most of the people. alt-tab is a very much used command and feature.

if your really interested in getting rid of "buffbots' all you would need is an interactive menu that comes up for both the buffee and the buffer requiring an active click. this can include a payment window as well.

i would think it would be pretty easy and painless for the devs to add.

From what we've been told by the devs Barb, is that our buff code is a poorly implimented pile of poodoo, which needs complete overhaul before anything more can really be done with it (which is why ent buffing is buggy at best)

I am afraid that if they took out alt-tabbing, I would be reduced to having a world-class temper tantrum.

I do think there is one change to the gameplay they could make that would solve the problem: removing the ability to let a macro keep folks logged in, and removing the ability for players to turn off auto-AFK. I'm not a programmer or a developer, so I don't know how easy this would be to implement, but when I played TSO, you got disconnected after fifteen minutes of inactivity, PERIOD. The only way to keep your character logged in longer was with a third-party program, which was obviously a bannable offense. This is always what I have thought should happen.

By the way, these forums are totally friggin' screwed up now, and it pisses me off. LITHIUM SUCKS.

Sorry, I control-escape out a lot when ever I need to have the characters on my 2 accounts interact with each other. If they did this, then I would not be able to:

  • ID my dancer & musician characters

  • Trade things between the characters on my 2 accounts

  • Gain any faction points with my pure entertainer on the Eclipse server ( I group her with my CH there and have them run missions together)

  • Train the characters on 1 account with the characters on the other

  • Paste screenshots directly into Photoshop in order to get a higher quality than the screenshots that show up in the game folder

I'm sure if I think about it that I could come up with a lot more things I do that I have to be able to tab out of the game for.

I think a much better and easier to implement solution would be to just have the server stop all macros on the serverat various random intervals. There are some cases in which looping macros are beneficial and I dont think we should take out the feature. If someone wants to run a macro loop, then let them... just reset all macros after a certain random interval. Then the only people who would be able to macro indefinatly would be people using thirdparty software, but they dont even have to use in game macros anyway as it is.

Sorry was not saying in any way that your idea is not good. I know that sometimes I get popups from aol and other places which switches me out of the game. It would be a real pain if I was then logged out as well.

woops on my last post I left out, that the solution mentioned should allow atk people to still use looping macros. The macro would randomly and periodically stop, but if you are ATK then you will have no problem noticing and restarting it.

This could be a little frustratin if you are buffing or crafting and your macro stopped, but I am thinking it should only happen maybe 3-4 times an hour.
