Thread: Can you make a cantina darker?

Some players in my city are attempting to setup our cantina for a sort of full on rave. That being said, we're trying to figure out how to kill as much of the ambient light as possible. I have some questions I was hoping those of you that have more experience with cantina decorating/performing might be able to answer:

1. Is the light in a cantina mostly from "source" lights (like actual lights that you can see and cover) or is it mostly from ambient light (light that is just there and you might now be able to block it)?

2. This depends on the answer to #1, but has anyone ever tried blocking out the light in a cantina? We thought of putting various kinds of lootable/craftable items over the doorways and any place we can tell light is coming from, but before we take the time to try it, I'd like to see if anyone has tried this before and what the results were.

I guess that's it for now, thanks in advance for the advice.

Before the "blue glow" was removed, imbedding holograms in the ceiling of cantinas lowered the brightness by causing the ambient light to be blue in color. I've been told this no longer works, however, I'venot had the chance to play with this since the holograms' appearance change. It was a very nice effect.

thanks for the response. I'll see what happens. I guess, in the worst case scenario, everybody could just turn down their brightness a lot?

A dimmer switch in all structures would be ideal.

You could try putting rugs up into the ceiling to block some light, but no idea how effective that would be.

That probably wont work.. If rugs are like paintings you and only "See" them from one side.

Good question... I was trying to think of a way to do this also. One thing I did with a cantina was put up a large wall going down the left side on the bandstand all the way to the ceiling. This created a hallway that goes back to the last alcove in the back corner. Sorta a V.I.P. room. It blocks out the light almost completly.

The hallway was constructed out of 40 wall sections purchased in crates from an architect.

If I remember right, the light in a cantina comes from the three circular "lamps" in the ceiling over the front part of the stage. It might be possible to contruct columns of wall sections up and around the lamps, or just block them out right at the source using something with some width to it, and not very deep... like ottomans or end tables.

Good luck.

While this won't really fix any light-blocking efforts, one way to darken your surroundings would be to setup "curtains" using black dresses for a darker atmosphere.

Drop the rug, top side is opaque (side towards light) which might block the light from ceiling to floor.

Looking from floor to ceiling, rug is invisible when raised up to the ceiling.

From the direction the light is coming from, the rug blocks it - but from the patron's perspective, there is no rug.

In theory it would work, but never tried it. And it would be expensive, but rugs do cover a fair amount of space.

Maybe I'll screw with this when I get home.

I'm in the process of setting up a Cantina and I've been trying to find a way to darken it as well. So they're not going to put the holos back to the way they used to be?

[edit: I just tried using an orange rug, didn't work for me..]
