It is a bug from the recent Publish. My droid is bugged, too.
First off, to be sure - your friend must have Novice Dancer or Musician to use the droid - which I'm sure they do. Just always good to confirm that.
Now, in regards to the "uses once then they quit working,"I think this is a symptom of the droid bug. When you first generate it from the deed, I think it works okay. That is, until you store the droid. Then if you call it again, the radial menu options on the droid won't have playback modules/effects module listed.
Hopefully the Devs will fix this sometime, or at least acknowledge it.
Until then, I'd avoid spending too much on droids.
Yes..the radial menu option for themodule works the first time it is accessed but is not accessible in subsequent attempts. Entertainer modules aren't the only ones affected by this. There is a lot of information on the DE forum regarding this bug.

If the track is recorded on the playback droid, group with it and try to start the song with /startband that should start your droid as well.
My droids were all deeded before publish 21 perhasp thats why they still work?

Coreena, can you possibly confirm if your droids all have storage modules in them?
Do any of them ONLY have effects or playback modules, or effects and playback modules, but no storage modules?

All my droids have storage modules, I'd never manage to carry all my clothes with me otherwise
Mine have storage as well, but I don't use my ent droids now as they add to the lag other players experience in the cantina - I just keep mine stored and let the musicians call their playback droids.
I loose some of the radial options when inside a building but have them when outside of a building. I'm just plain weird.
