I was thinking of a way to give us a good easy to use buff interface and eliminate the buffbot problem. Why not have watching or listening to us start the buff process, it would not require setperform or being grouped, once someone had watched us long enough to get a full buff a small icon would appear next to their name and we could target them and open a dialog to offer to activate the buff. This dialog box would require mouse clicks and would have not text command so it would not be macroable. It could include a secure payment option like the ID interface.
This would eliminate a lot of the problems with the current system, like not knowing when a buff was applied and give us control of the process while requiring an ATK presence.

Holy **edit**, I love this idea!
Non-invasive, non-macroable, forces payment, and easier to use than the old buff system!
Beautiful.

You'd have to worry about not making it so the buffbots don't become 'buff stealers'; i.e. people who wait around waiting to jump in and activate the buff for less then you're requiring. Creative, though.. i like it... we need to be able to know if we're doing our jobs or not, and right now we can't tell...

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'buff stealers'.
First off, they'd have to be atk, so they couldn't be bots anymore. If they are indeed atk, and they are willing to sell buffs for less, than this is merely part of the swg economy (wow, we could be part of the economy!), and competitiveness that would simply become part of the game
But I imagine the idea should make sure that only the person that someone is listening to/watching would be able to activate that buff. If the 'stealer' wanted to activate someone else's buff, the listener/watcher would have to start the process over.

I like the idea of an interface for buffing, similar to the ID interface, provided it's fairly small and doesn't take up the whole screen the way ID does. What I would like to see is a box that pops up that, in order to buff, you have to select a checkbox, kind of like for Stat Migrations in ID. Might be nice to have the payment options with the ID-style window too.
But if you can't macro selecting that checkbox, you make it much harder for someone to run a buffbot. Sure they'd have to run a third party, illegal macro program to make it work...which would (hopefully) get them banned. SOE is retarded if they insist on not making changes because someone might then resort to illegal programs. Just. Plain. Dumb.

Yeah this is very similar to Utess' proposal in Proposal for encouraging ATK play and improving buffing/healing which I think is still the best idea anyone has come up with for fixing the situation.

I've been pushing an idea very similar to Utess' when I get the chance. The trouble is anything that requires UI work right now is likely to be a definite "after JTL". As a result I've also been suggesting some simpler alternatives. The simplest of which is just a radial menu option to buff and/or heal. It's simplistic, requires no UI work, theoretically provides "idiot proof" buffing (The menu option wouldn't appear if they weren't listening/watching already), be more intuitive, and paired with the removal of /setperform and passive buffs, would make buffing require at a minimum keypresses, possibly mouse clicks if it's done right. It's always possible even something simple could be "after JTL" anyway, but it has a better chance of being sooner.
