Thread: Polling the Dancers

Well it sounds like somebody was in there buffing him- or herself with his or her dancer alt. Yeah, it was juvenile of her to have a tantrum in spatial when all you were doing was asking privately if she was AFK or not. Does the cantina have a sign posted that explicitly states that AFKing is not approved? If so, then I'd have no compulsion about booting her sorry butt out and banning her permanently. If, however, it's a known rule but not posted anywhere, I'd give her a second chance.

And I can understand why you lost your temper. It's very annoying to have what you think is a private conversation with someone via tells, only to have them start whining about it all over spatial.

Well, I had a sign in the cantina up until about a week before that incident. When I decided to give up the cantina, I removed many of the items that had my name specifically on it, as well as items of some sort of sentimental value that I had in there.

All the Anti-AFK signs had my name on them, so they had unfortunately come down. That's why I had not jumped the gun on the issue since I knew I had removed the signs. Like I said, I only made issue to her after someone had said they thought she was AFK.I ignored my initial suspicions when I walked in because there could have been many reasons why it was like that.

Since the day I bought my cantina (yes..bought an existing one in an awesome location) there has been a sign at the front door stating that unattended play is not permitted. I've had a lot of players try to argue with me that it should be their perogative todo their part in destroyingour professions whilein my residence. I don't argue. I simply state the rules. It is their decision to play by them or not, when in my playground. If their avatar is unattended while animating in my cantinathentheywillreturn to find itdancing on the front porch.

You saw her emote to you so you had to know that there was at least someone partially at the keys.

Why did you feel the need to question her further? I can understand why she was a but peeved at you for asking. You should know by now as an enertainer yourself how frustrating it can be to have people constantly questioning whether or not you are at the keys when you go out of your way to demonstrate that you are not by greeting people, smiling at them or whatever emote you choose to use. Usually interupting whatever type of conversations or bio writing or whatever you were doing prior to it.

Instead of swearing at her why didn't you just say, "Look, I'm sorry. I get a bit over zealous in my attempt to keep the cantina clean." Then walk away?

I would have been suspicious at first as you were and waited around for about 5 to 10 minutes before I sent a /tell as you did. But, I also think that if I had gotten a personal /emote, I wouldn't have pursued it because I would have thought she was there.

Although, there are some instances where an afk'er does come to the keyboard every once in awhile and check on things. So, keeping that in mind, I would have probably kept tabs on this particular individual to see if there was any future suspicious activity going on.

But, I don't think your questioning of this person warranted a defensive attitude on her part, either.

If I went into someone's cantina, and they asked, I would be happy that they care enough to stick their foot out. If someone finds that offensive, I'd have to wonder why.

The other day I was logged on my only remaining active character in all of SWG. I have been cutting back my time severely because I was unable to enjoy playing any longer. I was, however, the owner of the Cantina in the player city I helped to found. I knew that I was going to be purposefully cutting my time back to the point where I felt that I would be unable to sufficiently serve as the Cantina Proprietor for the city. I had been making arrangements with a good friend of mine to transfer ownership to a well-respected member of the Entertainer's Union guild on Kettemoor, being as they represent many of the good traits of ATK Entertainers for the Kettemoor community.

I had entered my cantina to find two people using the dance floor. Both were female, and both had the same last name. One character had several badges, many of which were profession. The other only had Master Dancer, and I believe Master Image Designer or Tailor. I cannot recall.I was in their for a good five or so minutes before I had noticed any activity from either of the characters. The Dancer on the stage first dancing and emoted a smile to the similarly named character sitting in the cantina. She then smiled over at me. There was no conversation occurring between the characters.I decided not to question it at the moment because it could be simply a case of roommates or sisters that were playing similar characters.

A few minutes pass, and I was busy communicating with my friend about the transfer of the cantina. During this time a wookie entered the cantina and said "Well, I thought you were AFK". The Dancer then said that she had been semi-afk. I did not speak in spatial, but rather sent the Dancer a tell to find out if she was an AFKer, since I knew that the girl who was taking over the cantina is as against AFK entertainment as myself. She assured me that she wasn't, and I was telling her that I just wanted to check. However, the Dancer seemed to take grave offense that I would even suggest that she would be an afker. That I was somehow in the wrong for questioning her since she went out of her way to send an emote my way, which clearly would indicate that she was not an AFKer.

I attempted to explain to her that the circumstances with her friend made it seem a bit odd, so that I wanted to check since the community of the town is resoundingly against AFKing of any sort. She then stopped her dance and said in spatial that the owner of the cantina was making her feel unwelcome and did not want anyone dancing there. I had told her repeatedly that I did not mind her dancing there, but that I was just trying to confirm that she was not an AFKer. I will admit that when she spoke openly in spatial that she was feeling unwanted in the cantina by the owner, that I lost my temper and resulted to some profane language.I found her behavior to be juvenile and catty, especially since I was telling her repeatedly that I did not mind dancers but that I wanted to make sure that the cantina was not being used in what I felt was inappropriate actions. It doesn't excuse my use of language, but I am far from perfect. I am a simple human, and sometimes people will do things that will make me use inappropriate language.

I ask the Dancer community this: Given the same situation where you would walk into your cantina to find that sort of event going on, would you have asked her politely in a tell about whether or not they were an AFKer? Would you have instantly booted her and her companions from the cantina? Would you have, presuming you are militia, banned them from accessing any features of the city? Would you have calledher out in public over the matter?

I thought I had done the polite thing, by asking only when it became apparent that it may be the situation. I had tried to do so in a tactful manner. I even checked with other residents of the town to see if they knew of the person before I even spoke to her in a tell. I made sure to check with the ones that have extensive contact with the entertainer community that frequents the town. My choice was to do something in the most tactful and polite manner that I could think of; however, it seems that I gravely insulted her by doing so.

What would you have done?

a personal macro is no garentee that the person is there jsut look at the stand here for invite solo botts i would have tryed talking in spatial and if no reply put them on the ban list and citybanned them and if the person gave me attitude id duel and kill them then dance on there corpse i have a vindictive side

I know that I'm not a frequent poster on these boards. However, I still would like to poll the population to see what the general consensus is of the people who play this profession.

Look like I said, I'm not excusing my actions. I admit that I lost my temper and did not handle the situation at the end the best. I was there specifically to transfer my cantina to someone else since I felt that I could no longer run it a way that would be beneficial for both my town and my server.

I only felt it necessary to ask her anything, even after the emote, when she had someone say that they thought she was AFK. I've had the unfortunate experience to see some rather sophisticated macros on Kettemoor, so an emote for me has never been enough to prove that someone is not AFK.

Thanks for all the answers though. I really did want to see what other people would have done in the situation. I had thought of several things that I could have done, but I tried to do what I thought was the best thing. I've been cutting my time in this game since most of the issues related to Dancer just get me very upset.

The way I look at it, it’s your Cantina and therefore your right to question anyone who is in there.
AND totally your prerogative to choose questions you want answered.

The surprised reaction of a customer walking in seeing her not AFK would most likely make me draw same conclusions too.
Just because she was not AFK atm doesn’t mean she never is, a person voicing his/her surprise about her not being AFK logically suggest one of two things: 1. she AFKs a lot there or 2. he’s comment was misunderstood by you and he/she was actually pleased seeing non-AFK entertainer.

Either way I see nothing wrong in you asking for clarification.
