If you /bandflourish while not dancing at all, will the rest of your group still do the flourish? It occurs to me that one possible solution to the problem of the bandfo leader's timing being off is to have a "choreographer" standing off to one side and doing the flourishes while not being part of the performance.
As I write this, I wonder if it's necessary to even be an entertainer. They might get the "you don't have the necessary skill" error, but would it still work for the rest of the group?
If no one knows the answer, anyone want to join up with me at the next Gypsy party and try it out?

Umiio "Umi" Panwanga • Rodian party girl • Bria
Iba'onchab • Gets boarded sometimes • Chimaera
This random sig quote is brought to you by Edgar Allen Poe:
"He calls all those things "odd" which are beyond his comprehension, and thus lives amidst an absolute wilderness of oddities."

I'm fairly certain that you have to be skill animating to use the /bandflo command
(It would make things look much better if you could have an actual coordinator though. One that wasn't moving.)

Yes you need to be dancing.
I've done a few performances where the person actually doing the bandflourish was either off to the side, or not even in the same room.

Yeah, I take that back. It wouldn't be better if your coordinator didn't have to be moving. It would be better if there was no difference in the execution timing

I saw somewhere (I can't remember where) a suggestion that the one doing the bandflos do a different dance than the rest of the group so that it looks less strange.

I've been in situations where a "choreographer" handled the flos off to the side (such as off-camera) for the rest of the group. Popular seems to work wellfor the dance the choreographer calls the flos from,as it has all 8 flos, the flos are rather short in duration, it is comparatively stationary and drift is somewhat controllable with it. With a little practice, good timingand a move-by-move knowledge of the dances, a good choreographer cancall the flosto make up for the latency between off-camera choreography & dancers but on-camera, latency will always be there until we are allin onebig room with the servers. (props to Ub-ick..best choreographer Evah!).

Javier introduced me to the simple elegance of this move. I think it looks best when the lead dancer (or choreographer) is in the middle of the group or up front as it is indeed a highlight. However, I don't advise it as a means to hide lag latency as the choreographer would still run the risk of being significantly off step from his/her fellow troupe member. I know this from experience. For example atthis past Christmas Crawl, try as I might to time the different dance flos properly, I still ended my different dance flo before my group members were even halfway through their bandflo. I spent most of the CC off to the side dancing by myself (except for the times a few dancers took pity on me andtook overthe bandflos).
