Thread: What should long lasting, minor buffs be like?

From Blair's post regarding the CU:

  • The profession trees for Entertainers, Musicians, Dancers and Image Designers will be affected by the Combat Upgrade, and will likely need some profession tweaking because of the changes with wounds, stat migration and buffs to the mind. We will make adjustments to entertainers by creating some long lasting, minor buffs for combat professions. The initial changes to these professions will be: Profession Dancer

I don't know wether we'll have a chance to somehow influence this or if it is possibly already set in stone behind the curtains, but we should at least try to influence what that is gonna be. After all, it is our very role in the Galactic Civil War and in the arrangement of profession.

So what should we demand as long as we can, that:

  1. Is important enough to give us an important role, both considering buffing other players and ourselves?

  2. Encourages social interaction and is not easyly or entirely reproduceable by buffbots? Maybe even makes our performance more enjoyable and would make people actually want to watch us?

  3. Is easy enough to implement so we will not be ignored (if we ask for a complete revamp we'll probably not get anything at all, so it's one step at a time, I guess)

Of course that is not easy to figure out, since we do not know too much about the CU yet.

My first thought was possibly melee defense up to +5 for one hour for us and ranged defense up to +5 for one hour for the musicians... but that seems not to solve our problem.

Or some kind of meta buff, that makes other professions buffs, food, spices work better? Still no solution for the second point...

I fear, even though I started this, I am lacking some good ideas at the moment, but I believe we have to take the chance to discuss that. The only thing I can tell is that it would better be connected to the effect and not to the flourish or dance itsself. Or maybe the way that we arrange different dances and flourishes. Maybe a larger number of dancers/musicians would enhance the quality of a buff.

But that's when we collide with point 3 again...

I agree, those are great ideas. I am really happy to see people thinking out of the box with this. I'd also like for us to get away from our only client base being combatters. And I'm sure there are many crafters who'd be happy to get a bonus to assembly or experimentation.

I too think that affecting something other than the usual stats is an excellent idea. They have a variety of new "stims" that offer short duration affects to speed for various weapons so I think having buffs affect these types of skills isn't too much of a stretch. It's also a great way to help professions other than "combat". DE's, Medics, Entertainers, Tailors, AS, WS etc... could all use a boost of some sort couldn't they? Perhaps we could have an options window similar to an ID window that allowed the patron to request what they wanted enhanced? I'd think it would be hard to code up an afkbot for that Though I have no idea how this would affect being able to provide multiple buffs at one time. As it stands now, I can simply keep inviting people to my group because theya re all getting the exact same buff. How would it work if I was enhancing different things? Can the buff "mechanic" of doing the dance remain the same while still allowing an interface window to determine what gets enhanced?

great thoughts!

When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.

Here is a small problem I have with the idea of long lasting, minor buffs.

IF we are losing our pre-combat interdependancy by losing mind buffing. And the CU leaves us with NO pre-combat ability only post through BF healing. Then Buff Bots for the most part will disappear. They will still be there for a lot of people for the lots and what not. But a lot of people will simply cancel those accounts or respec them into something they might find more useful.

Now if nothing is done to try and stop afking of our professions, and they then add another pre-combat step to us. No matter how little or slight it is, We will become "required", "needed" as any advantage... is an advantage. And out come the bots again.

I would love to see any number of buff ideas go in. Anything from like wound defence +5(would be like you take 30 health wounds in one shot and it reduces the amount of wounds you take by 5 or something like that)

To random buffs to skills or cool down warm up phase of specials.(Maybe you'll get that +5 to ranged Defense.. maybe it gives you +5 to your harvesting... This could also be expanded to work with crafters as well.)

But my huge hang up is that any pre-combat role that can be done with a macro will be done with a macro.(of course maybe we have to buy different "buff" packs to use which would greatly cut down on bots, Random Buff Pack does +10 to random skill or what not.. or could use specific packs that would at give +5 to the listed skill or ability.)

Buffs that reduce the wind up/wind down time for Specials would likely be nice.

Buffs that increase the effectiveness of any skill would be good.

Buffs that affect one of the non-health pools, or their recharge rate would be good.
