...this may not be the best place for this, but thought surely dancers could understand!

I will shortly be dancing in a privately owned cantina that will be available to the public, at least in the beginning. I would like a little "wallop" under the belt, if you know what I mean, for those customers that deserve a pummeling from time to time.

Any suggestions as to what would best suit a twi'lek dancer who wants to be able to stand up for herself if needed?

I big burly wookiee with a bad attitude might help, hehe.

I'd suggest training up one ranged weapon through the novice level, get a few combat friends to help you out in the field every once in awhile. I favor pistols, but rifles might be best since those target Headshots and the worst harrassers tend to have the lowest mind pools - in real life as well as in game, lol.

If you have money, just buy a ProBot from a droid engineer. You could take out pretty much anything with that.

I had given some thought to TeraKasi, as we are going to insist the put their weapons away before entering! Haven't the foggiest idea how to get started though!

to get started in Teras Kasi, first step out of town and start punching things! Just a slight heads up, it will REALLY suck until you get your first level of unarmed combat training. Target creatures that con blue/light blue at first. Once you get that first level, things get a bit better, and you will notice that you are hitting harder and getting hit for less. After raising another level in unarmed, you will be able to take white con mobs if you play your cards right. Unarmed hit 1 is very nice for that level. Your goal is to get up to expert unarmed, after which you will need to save up yet more unarmed xp to get Teras Kasi novice. So, yeah, long story short, go beat things up. If you are on Bloodfin, send a tell to Praxxis and I will train you in unarmed. Hell, I'm usually pretty bored with the grind anyway so I'll probably help you beat things up too.

PS - it will take a long time :-p

Teras Kasi Novice took about the same amount of time and effort as Novice Dancer for me. The big plus to having the fighting skill aside from being able to accept duels from jerks is that you can take missions and augment your credit balance when tips are rough.
