Thread: dance card
So far i've just been dancing on touch, freestyle dancing,.. flourishing whenever and whatever i wanted. Now though that i get more dances I wish to start combining them, stealing flourishes from one and inserting them in the other dance.
I've been playing with that a little now and i come to a point where i want to make a dance card, listing the flourishes with a short discription of what they animate, their duration and the offcenter steps they take (so that it's easier to plan wich way i can use it to dance around the room). Ofcourse i can go in and make such a list myself, and i will, if I'm unable to obtain an existing list from you guys.
So that's my question. Have you done something like that? have you timed the flourishes and have those times somewhere in a text file? Have you listed the flourishes in an order simmilar to this example from Sultrina; ?
sample dance card(its best to get all the dances on one page by using landscape layout:
Basic Rhythmic
1. boogie turn 1.
2. crouch wipe/boogie/spin2.
3. hop turn/hip action 3.
4. knee pump/big arms4.
5. knee lift/torso bot 5.
6. mime/knee drop 6.
7. Moon walk lft 3/rgt 6/lft 3 7.
8. side to side arm pump 8.
I would love to have that info and would be eternally gratefull to you if you could cut and paste your dancecard info into this thread.
Thanks in advance

paithz,
There are two really good reasons why everyone should make their own dance card.
1) I have a complete dance card, but some of it wont make sese to you because it tells me in my ownwordswhat I need to know to remember the flourishes.
2) As we continue to explore dancing in my dance school it will become clear you need to know what a flourish looks like in your head so you can time ahead for your mixing of the flourishes. So as you study the flourishes and write them in your dance card you will be solving two problems at once.
Sultrina,
If i don't understand what your discription of the flourish stands for then i will ofcourse adapt it so that it makes sense to me. But still modefying an existing card is faster to do then inventing the wheel again.
I've learnt that by bouncing off idea's; "how do you do that,.. oh,.. but i do it like this, but hmm,. i see,.,. hey! then you can try it like this as well", sort of thing, the art will progress and grow a lot faster than if one single person has to struggle to learn on it's own.

Actually, I have to agree with Sultrina on this one. Although I agree thatsharing ideas to find better ways of doing things to benefit the community as a whole is the way to go (and I hope my posts reflect that), this is one thing you should do on your own.
There is no better way to learn a flourish than by doing it, watching it, moving the camera and doing it a few more times, see what differences are made, exactly what the last move in the flourish is before you can press the key for the next one to make a seamless routine... it goes on.
There are some things others can't do for you and I firmly believe this is one of them. Sure you could get a finished dance card with timings, but that isn't going to make you KNOW them any better, and I mean really know. So that you can watch someone dancing then copy it because you knew all the moves... Now I am waffling, but you get the idea!
Another more technical reason is your pc, internet connection, and connection to the swg servers. All of these man that what is correct timing for one person, isn't going to be correct for you.
What I will do to help you fill out your own dance card is suggest a method that I suspect Sultrina will hate, but it will get you there more quickly than the traditional method she and I used ![]()
- Start dancing.
- Type: /flo X; /pause xx; /flo X; /pause xx;
- where X is the flourish you are working on, e.g. flo 1
- where xx is a number you pick for the given dance, e.g. pause 15
- Watch closely (I had a watch with a second hand) to see how close or far out you are then alter the pause xx accordingly. Once the two flourishes run straight into one another with nothing from the basic dance (and you will want to do this a few times to confirm it by pressing ctrl and the up cursor followed by enter) then you have the timing to write on your dance card.
- Repeat for all flourishes, all dances.
Hope that helps you ![]()
thank you Kyorlana,
Thats a good method of finding out the flo time. I've ofcourse tried timing it simply with a stopwach in hand, but that really proved too unaccurate. It's a great tip, i'll surely use it.
I guess I'm more looking for tips about how to set up my own dance card (hence I asked for all to post their cards, not just one, but all the different cards and idea's out there). That way I can pick out the bright idea's like the slash / in Sultrina's example. It's the easiest way of putting in your discription that the florish has two main parts. But i didn't think of using it when i tried to make my card (yes I'd started out on making my own already), consequence was that my discription became too long. Seeing Sultrina's idea about the / was a revelation, same asyour flo timing method.
