Thread: Our Starport Crawl on Shadowfire results

So a few weeks ago I decided to try to gather as many ATK entertainers as possible into one traveling party. I decided not to advertise the event but rather see what would happen if people just saw us. Our beloved Tanoo suggested only outdoor venues so last night we performed in Coronet (at the entertainer trainer area), in Theed (just in front of the starport), and In Bestine (again at the trainer area). We had a strong core group of 2 musicians and 3 dancers with occassional drop ins (including one in her ruby newbie slippers). Tano, our roadie, even put together fireworks displays for the event. We had a great time in Coronet - although the people parking their pets in our midst was a bit annoying, had a few people take a seat and cheer us on in Theed, and drew a small crowd in Bestine. It was great fun and we hope to do it again.

For me it clearly demonstrated a few things about my server:

1) some people do enjoy live entertainers. we didn't draw huge crowds but for the most part those who stopped enjoyed themselves. There was one overt imperial who remarked with disdain that all we could do was entertain, but he's an imperial so I don't expect much.

2) too few people know that dancers can perform together

3) a bunch of people don't seem to know you can't heal or buff out in the open and expect us to simply stop performing and go with them to a building.

*actual conversation I had last night*

Person: "I need a mind buff"

Me:"We can't heal or buff outside"

Person: "Then what are you doing here?"

Me: /boggle "Having fun"

We hope to keep doing this on a regular basis. It was a lot of fun for us, and while it doesn't fulfil my original goal as a support character, SOE is doing their best to remove that potential any way...

I also took the opportunity to tell the entertainers we hadn't met before about our chat channel in an effort to grow our community. I just hope it's not all in vain.

cheers,

Ikewe

That sounds quite similar to the results we would have on Bria with the occasionally Star Port Jams we would put together. We would get folks who would cheer, folks that would jeer, and folks that just would not get it at all. Another common reaction was... "so, what are you gusy doing...protesting AFKers again?" It will never cease to amaze me how some combat folk never seem to think we would dance/play *just* for the fun of it. Is that not the point?

Just yesterday a large group of us was jamming right in front of Bestine. The lag was horrible, but worth it. As one combatant put it,

"OMG only 7 frps.... It is so worth it though!"

Glad someone is having good results with this.

Our band on Naritus is not having much luck... We don't perform outside the starports, but in the old, unused cantinas like Nashal and the Endor outposts. I post to the Naritus forum every week and send message to my friends list and so on to let people know we are performing, but so far on our "cantina revival" tour we haven't revived much... I think maybe one person outside of our own guild (several of whom show up each week out of pity, more than anything else, I guess) has shown up each week.

So we're gonna end the tour and go back to just performing in our own cantina I guess. /sigh

But it's nice to see at least people on some servers appreciate real performers. I guess it varies from server to server.

Don't give up hope. You know those Cantina Crawls on Bria? Well, here's a little known secret outside of our server - we get very few non-entertainers to show up and most of them are friends we've made along the way or former entertainers who traded in their tap shoes or bugles for pikes and mega-guns but still miss performing. Sure, we get a large number of entertainers to attend, but look at the publicity we have with the videos. I can assure you that if it were still just the core group of original friends who simply got together to have fun, we'd still be doing the Crawls. Don't worry about the turn out or the reception. Get together just for the fun of itand to enjoy being with your friends. You'll never be disappointed then.

Kirah is dead on, if it is fun don't worry about the audiences. I will also say that asking people to go out of their way to see you is asking for disappointment if audience is your desire. Do what the rest of us do get out to places where people are. On Corbantis we have great success simply playing in the street in front of Theed cantina. There are enough, not a lot, but enough people who stop and enjoy it to make it worth while.

Yes we get the idiots who park their stuff on us, we get the people who want to know why we aren't in the cantina where they need us, we get the people who laugh at us. So what if its fun then its fun and they can't take that away from you.

Yeah but we can do that much more conveniently for everyone (including wounded guild mates in need of healing) from our own town. Why bother doing a cantina crawl to get together with people who (with one exception) already all live in the same player town?

True, but we've always felt it was fun to see new cantinas and try to surprise players with a mass entrance into their city by a group of hawtpant clad entertainers (just make sure you don't accidently land in a "hot" city of the opposite faction . . . . . ). It's fine to only play in your cantina. However, that seems kinda like constantly rehearsing for a play that never opens for the public to see.
