Thread: Suggestion: putting on shows, and not falling down..
I'm not a dancer.. I'm a musician currently on one of the servers I play on, but after watching all the dancers either falling over, or swinging a weapon, I had an idea.
How about making two modes of dancing.. a Practice mode and a Performance mode? They would work like this...
Practice Mode:
Works like dancing does now, with the occaisional misstep, butt-landing or balance-losing. But, it would store up a pool of "anti-falling" points, or a timer.
Performance Mode:
This would use up the anti-falling points, or deplete the timer, and allow the dancers to perform without falling down, for however long it takes to use up the stored practice.
Why?
Well the only time I've seen a trio of dancers all performing together, using bandflourish and doing the same dance, the effect was spoiled by individuals falling over. I'd like to see this as a means to encourage people to put on stage shows, and as an incentive to do group choreography.
We have all these theatres, and I've only ever seen one concert, on Vreni island a looong time ago. It was a great spectacle, and is something I think a lot of players would be surprised to see.. the commands are there to run these shows, we just need some incentive to use them and organise!
As an aside, why not make bandflourish give a few extra % of xp? Get people to start coordinating earlier, and building proper dance troupes and bands

But I'm roleplaying someone who shouldn't fall all the time. So, this flavor hurts my roleplaying.
I can see why there shouldn't be a flawless performance, but it should be rare. I mean like once a month.
How many times do you see a performer fall in a musical or other dance show? It's pretty rare. Now, someone may do a misstep and then try to cover it up with an awkward flourish, but that is not as atrocious as flat-out falling on your butt.
The practice vs performance mode would be interesting. I have an idea that wouldn't incorporate a timer or anything quite as complicated as that. If you're in practice mode, you may fall down, but you get experience as you learn these things. When you're in performance mode, you do not fall down (or maybe risk a 0.001% chance per flourish) but you get quarter experience (or none at all). You aren't learning much in performance mode because you are going back to your tried-and-true tricks. You already know that you are capable of leaping 3 feet in the air and landing with both feet because you've practiced it.

Likewise, I like the falls too, a nice touch. However, during performances, they can spoil the effect of 3 dancers all doing dancing together. Perhaps have a reduced chance of falls during performance-mode, based on level, so a master will fall less than someone with only Techniques 2, for example.

1) I think this is a great idea!Either method sounds good. I would love to be able to bring back performances. It seems a lost enterprise on my server anyway. Falls, while I think are stupid, especially for masters, are necessary so we don't have perfect, robot like dancing everytime (and it provides some good roleplay). But when you do a band flourish they are really really bad. Practice and performance mode! Excellent! Way to go on the great thinking!
2) This is a constructive post!
